I spent 30 minutes on this and came up with all of your jumping off points. You already have more info than I could provide but here is what I came up with:

I did a search on the DPMO site and I came across his listing under WWII MIA's for the letter J but the listing only gives service number and date of loss. It doesn't say wether or not his remains have been recovered.

You might go to their site and click on the archives section. There is a wealth of research resources there. Check out their links page also. You can of course also contact the DPMO office through the site.

On the American Battle Monuments page you can also do a search that will again help you find his grave. You might do a small intro to the ABMC as part of your report if his grave marker is at one of these.

You could also check a site called Home of Hero's.

I also found that he did not recieve a MOH.

    Hope this helps some.

Do you know the unit that he was assigned to? You can check with the Center for Military History and tons of other sites to get a history of the unit. You might even find out the particular action where Lt. Jorgensen went MIA / was killed.

Also, with the name of the unit, you might find an active association for the unit - for example the 12th Armored Division Association and a museum http://www.12tharmoredmuseum.com/ that can help you find out more. Even a chance to interview someone who knew Lt. Jorgensen.

Also, do a really good search of the Omaha newspapers, and any other newspapers that might be 'local' for where he lived and grew up. Special attention to dates near his birth (birth announcements sometimes give info on the family); high school graduation (special awards or honors?); MIA/Death dates (obituary); near his enlistment/commissioning dates (notice was often published of these milestones) and the death dates of his parents / siblings (again, maybe additional family information printed).

What high school? Do they have an archive of old yearbooks? Look for clubs, activities, honors to be printed there.

Is there family still in the area? Perhaps direct if Lt. Jorgensen had children before deploying, else other relatives? They might know family stories of Uncle Eugene.

    Good luck!

The song "The Ballad of the Green Beret" was written by Robin Moore and performed by Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler (U. S. Army), not Johnny Cash. As far as the music being played and listen to, have you ever seen the movie "Good Morning Vietnam"? It is based on the true story of Airman Adrian Cronauer. He was a D.J. on the Armed Forces Vietnam Network. Try these links.

put his name into the search box, go to page four on what pops up, and there is a guy that looks like it might be his dad, he served in WW1 and came home and married had 4 children etc, there are some letters held at his old alumni, maybe it contains something about his sons loss.......after all if it is his dad, this man only died in 1987.
