Actually, this is an update to the NIV translation of the Bible. Most people in the world are not trained scholars in the languages of the Bible: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Translating scripture into other languages is not unique to Christianity. Consider the Septuagint and English modern translations of Hebrew scriptures.

No one translation will ever be exact. Many words of the original languages do not have precise English meanings or direct word-for-word parallels. There's also a historical barrier in that thousands of years separate the modern translator from the original documents. So, the more we learn about history and customs of ancient people (e.g., archeological discoveries over the years has helped improve our understanding) the easier translation becomes. Also, the ancient languages -- as with modern language -- had their idioms, figures of speech, and euphemisms. Expressing those literally in modern language would not convey the actual meaning that the authors would trying to convey. With all of that in mind, all translation require at some interpretation. For example, even though the King James Version is a word-for-word translation, it's not "unbendingly" so.

So, there are some different approaches to translating the ancient texts. One is formal equivalence (word-for-word), dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought), and paraphrase. Another consideration is the use of gender-inclusive language (language with consideration for women). Some translations use the language of the original, some go far reaching (some say overboard) to use inclusive language, and others such as the ESV use gender-inclusive language if the author CLEARLY meant to include both men and women and otherwise retain language of the author. Considering some of the barriers to translation previously mentioned, a dynamic equivalence translation seeks to express the thought of each verse in modern language so that it will have the same meaning to the modern reader as it would have had to people of the original text thousands of years ago. Expressing thought-for-though requires interpretation, and the further one departs from formal equivalence, the more the readers depend upon the translators' interpretations.

To say that the Lord's word is not accurate is overreaching a bit. The different translations all have something to offer readers. And, they help bring the Lord's word to more and more people and make it accessible. For example, is it more important to have a word for word translation, or is it important to convey so that the reader actually understands what it means? Having a variety of translations can help readers understand fully the meaning of the Lord's word.

Speaking of the NIV, there's a variation of it called the NIrV, which is the Reader's version of the NIV. It's translated using simpler English and especially with children in mind. The KJV, for example, is written at about a 12th grade reading level. The NIrV, on the other hand, is written so that elementary age children can understand (helping to make the Lord's word more accessible to children).

So "accurate" as you've asked is actually subjective.

    I hope this helps.

    Peace be with you.

    EDIT:

Here's a site to help you with your question pertaining to rendering of Ahaziah's age.

    http://www.febc.edu.sg/VPP4.htm

Another consideration pertaining to translations is that our understanding of ancient languages has improved since the days of the earlier translations such as the KJV. We also have more manuscripts (including earlier ones) which have been discovered since the days of the KJV, so translators today have more to reference.

    EDIT 2:

Although you didn't come right out and ask it directly, I suspect that your *actual* question is something like, "How can Christians be sure that their beliefs are based on truth when there seem to be contradictions within their own translations?"

    Peace be with you.

Because of translations from Greek to english need to be adjusted. Also core meanings of all the passages in the bible are preserved.

Weak argument from a person who doesn't understand my religion and yet hates it enough to spread misinformed lies.

Hey people who are ESL(english as a second language) find it real hard sometimes to interpret things. First of all you need to be able to perfectly speak fluently and super understand both languages and then ponder with philosophers as to what could have they meant when he wrote this.

I still read from the English translation of the Tanakh.

The word of God is true or God is a liar.

If Allah can not keep his word then why would you follow him?

I can't imagine why Muslims must insist that their own god is a liar in order to save their religion.

If your god can not or will not keep his word....then you worship a god no better than Satan.

Well which Christians are you talking about... there are different religions and churches that are christian. But there is also Lutherans, Presbyterians, Orthodox, Mormons. But from my understanding Roman Catholics kept all the books in their bible. The updating consists of translations or different opinions about a scripture or passage so that's why they update it continuously

I hope you don't think that the quran has no errors.

    * Who misleads people? Satan or Allah?

According to verse 4:119-120, Satan (the rejected one) is the one who creates false desires and misleads people. Refer also 15:42. However, according to verse 16:93, it is God who leaves people astray as He wills! See also 4:78.

    *Attitude towards unbelieving parents

Quran gives contradicting information as to what a believer should do when unbelieving parents and brothers insist on worshipping their gods. Verse 31:15 asks believers to keep company with unbelieving parents even if they insist (on following their religion?), but verse 9:23 asks believers not to take their fathers and brothers as protectors if they disbelieved!

*Which enters the Paradise: Soul or Body or Both?

After resurrection, it is the body (after reuniting with the soul?) which enters the Paradise. This has been emphasized throughout the Book. See verses 13:5, 17:98-99, 20:55, 34:7, 75:3-4. However verses 27-30 in Sura 89 state that it is the Soul (Nafs)* which enters the Garden!

*God needs man or man needs God?

A very clear contradiction exists between verses 51:56 and 35:15. While the former verse says that God created Jinns and mankind for His own reasons (read also 67:2), the latter one says it is man who is in need of God! Read also 51:57.

*While one verse says that both Evil and Good issue from Allah, the very next verse says only Good comes from Allah!

4:78" If some good befalls them, they say "This is from Allah". But if evil, they say "This is from thee" (O prophet). Say: "All things are from Allah....."* (4:79)

"Whatever good, (O man!) happens to thee, is from Allah. But whatever evil happens to thee, is from thyself"

Who has to be blamed for the wrongs done?

    * From verses 35:8, 16:93, 74:31, 2:142, we learn that it is Allah who has to be blamed for all the misguidance. While other verses hold man himself responsible for the wrongs done (30:9, 4:79).

*What was man created from, blood, clay, dust, or nothing?

"Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood," (96:2).

"We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape, (15:26).

"But does not man call to mind that We created him before out of nothing?" (19:67, Yusuf Ali). Also, 52:35).

"Let there be no compulsion in religion (2:256).contradicting verses. Fight those who believe not in allah (9:29).proclaim a grievous penalty to those who reject Faith," (9:3)

Pharaoh: According to the Quran (Surah 7:120-125) Pharaoh used crucifixion in dealing with the sorcerers

The Golden Calf: According to the Quran (Surah 20:90-100)a Samaritan helped the Israelites build the golden calf, and it mooed after coming out of the fire. In reality, Samaritans did not exist as a people until at least 1000 years after the time of the Moses and the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Again a problem of historical compression.

Alexander the Great: According to the Quran (Surah 18:89-98) Alexander the Great lived to a ripe old age. Historical records however show that Alexander the Great died young at 33 years of age (b. 356 B.C. - d. 323 B.C.), and believed he was divine, forcing others to recognize him as such. In India on the Hyphasis River (now Beas) Alexander erected twelve altars to twelve Olympian gods. Once again the Quran shows errors in historical and religious fact.

The fact is that the quran may not have translation errors but actual errors. Don't you get it a revelation of one man has flaws.Don' t ascertain that there is only one quran, people are aware of how many are there.

Some versions are harder to translate to other languages...besides, the most important book on Earth needs to be studied, and studied carefully.

the bible, the Qur'ran, the Torah all of it

it's thousands of years old, translated and retranslated from dead languages to other languages into yet other languages

seriously, we're better off debating which translation of Crime and Punishment is more accurate to the original
