Why does American football kick off and punt?
I know how it got the name football. But, I mean the guy making the rules to begin with, why didn't they do a throw off for the start of the game, or throw into the uprights for a field goal...Even throw off on 4th instead of punt? Did they assume it would go further? Or just to add difficulty?

The forward pass was added to the game after it had already been played at the college level for about 40 years. Kicking a ball forward was kept as the game evolved from rugby.
