American atheist.........................?
Me and my friend were talking and the subject of religion came up. He said that it was a christian nation. It bothered me because it isn't. My question is does it bother you when people say it is a christian nation?

Christians have a way of re-writing history to meet their own ends. They generally don't let reality get in their way:
"The United States in is no sense founded upon the Christian religion." George Washington
"Revealed religion has no weight with me." Benjamin Franklin
"I do not find in Christianity one redeeming feature." Thomas Jefferson
"This could be the best of all possible worlds if there were no religion in it." John Adams
"I disbelieve all holy men and holy books." Thomas Paine
"Religions are all alike, founded upon fables and myths." Thomas Jefferson
"In no instance have churches been the guardians of the liberties of the people." James Madison
"The Christian god is cruel, vindictive, capricious, and unjust." Thomas Jefferson
"What has been Christianity's fruits? Superstition, bigotry, and persecution." James Madison
Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bibleis filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize
mankind." Thomas Paine
"The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my profession."
Abraham Lincoln
If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise
of fighting a foreign enemy.
--James Madison
"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires." Susan B. Anthony
"If we look back into history for the character of the present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers ofpersecution. The primitive Christians thought persecution extremely wrong in the Pagans, but practiced it on one another. The first Protestants of the Church of England blamed persecution in the Romish Church, but practiced it upon the Puritans. They found it wrong in Bishops, but fell into the practice themselves both here (England) and in New England."
-Franklin
"I looked around for God's judgments, but saw no signs of them."
-Franklin
"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced an inch
towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth."
-Jefferson
"Experience witnesseth that ecclesiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the purity and efficacy of religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen
centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."
-Madison
"As I understand the Christian religion, it was, and is, a revelation. But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends, have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed?"
-Adams
"The simple truth is that there isn't a single civil right I would deny to an evangelical Christian. I've defended their freedom of religion, of association, of disassociation, and believe they should be treated with respect. I wouldn't dream of drumming them out of the military, firing them for their faith, tearing up their relationships, or taking their children away from them. The favor, alas, is not returned."
-Andrew Sullivan
"A free society is a place where it's safe to be unpopular."
-Adlai Stevenson
"Any time you hear 'we respect civil liberties, but...' you know the next part is going to be bad. It's almost like 'I'm not a racist, but...'"
-DragonWriter, on Slashdot.org
"The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins."
-Oliver Wendell Holmes
"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself."
-Thomas Paine
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
-Voltaire
"Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too."
-Voltaire
"We must remember that a right lost to one is lost to all."
-William Reece Smith, Jr.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

It does not because I'm atheist but because it's stupid. The founding fathers never declared this a christian nation, sure they mentioned god but god could belong to any other religions. The first amendment says 'congress shall make no laws regarding a religious establishment'. And the Treaty of Tripoli (look it up) it was unanimously passed and signed by John Adams (one of our founding fathers) where it said that America was not a christian nation by any means. So how are we living in a christian nation?
Sure, the majority here are christians but we are not a theocracy and many of our laws have shown that. I think the ones who say that are mostly wishful thinkers who are confusing religious affiliation with a theocracy. It's not the same.

That depends.
The US government deems it so, and if it says it is, then it must be right?
In god we trust might be stamped on your dollar bills, but if that's the case, then why does the US need to many nukes, huns and ammo if that's really the case.
America is a mixture of cultures, and to say it's a christian nation is as big a misconception as it comes. Just ask the Native American Indians, if you can find one that is.
Oh!
As to the teachings of the man Christ, how many do you really know that are true to his ideals? You would be right in assuming the US is not a Christian nation. Just because they says it's so, doesn't make it true.

Such silly claims underline the weakness of their belief as much as their claims!!
The churches own figures show only 28% ever attend church in a year. Indeed if 28% ever tried to attend church on the same day, even working shifts, there is simply not enough churches!!
But count the bars - in many places there is more space In the bars than the churches!!
But even though their true numbers are shown to be drastically less than they frequently try to claim they are seen as a significant threat to America!!
Homeland Security is having to put more and more time and resources into tracking christians who seek to tear up the constitution, destroy democracy and foment a second civil war to install a christian dictatorship!!
A chilling warning was issued to US police forces about the threat of a rise in violent right wing and christian extremist groups fueled by recession and hostility over the election of the first black president!!
Seems these people are not just a bigger threat to American freedoms than external terrorists but completely anti American!!!

Well, Christian nation meaning the majority of Americans are Christians - that's correct.
Christian nation meaning that Christianity has some kind of special place in our government - that's incorrect.
When people say America is a Christian nation (meaning the latter), I just laugh and tell them to double check the Treaty of Tripoli. And I usually feel bad that they are so misinformed...but that's not my problem.

Christians will say anything and the sad part is that some people will believe them. The US, hopefully to which you were referring, is a religious tolerant nation. It is not a christian nation, unless you are a George Bush fanatic.

Certainly; it bothers me a lot that there are people who think that this is a christian nation.
In the 1950's christians wanted the pledge of allegiance to say under christ rather than under god

It bothers me to see people are misinformed, but it doesn't really matter in the end. Kindly tell him that it is not.
@ "It is a Christian nation. Christianity is what our nation was founded upon. Looks at the signers of the declaration of independence."
ironically, our Founding Fathers saw that religious divide would only weaken America. Therefore, we have freedom of religion. People came here to escape oppression. Dur, dur, dur!

Yes, it does bother me.
It is because it was stated by the founders that this was not a nation BASED on Christianity. Yes, the majority -are- Christian, but this country was not -founded- on Christianity.
