Is it safe to put barbs with my platties, cory, and shark?

I have a relatively new 20 gallon freshwater tank and was told at petco that barb fish can be somewhat aggressive and should probably not be put in my tank. This coming from someone at petco, I don't trust so much considering I get different stories about animals from every single employee. I currently have a red wag platy, a sunset fire platy, a red tail shark, and (I believe) a bronze cory catfish. So the question is: would it be safe for all the fish to add any similar sized barbs once my tank is more established?

Update:

Well after doing some research I found that nobody knows the average adult size of a red tail shark. The sign at petco says 4", some websites say up to 6", some are saying 4" inches and most likely only 3", so who knows. If my shark gets too big for the tank I'll give him a new home, but honestly a 3 or 4 inch lone shark in my 20 gallon tank should do fine as long as I'm keeping the water in good condition. Plus I was always told to never get as many fish (in full grown inches) as there are gallons in the tank. I don't see how having four fish is way too many fish when they're all community fish with an average size of 2-3 inches. I'm only keeping one shark who is a panzy to boot. If anything I would only be adding one barb to the mix I just wanted to know if they would be safe together or not from someone who knows what they're talking about.

you have too many fish for a 20 gallon the red tail shark needs 50 gallons to be happy and he will most likely pester the other fish being in such a small tank which can lead to alot of problems. if your fish are stressed they are vulnerable to disease, but even if you take him back 20 gallons is a pretty small.
