Shot in the dark.. when was the gene 'pale' discovered in D. melanogaster?
I know this is pretty specific, but I'm trying to write a paper on this gene (pale/ple) in D. melanogaster which is due tomorrow at noon. I can't seem to find any references pertaining to the actual discovery of the gene, though. Please cite where you found this information, I will forever be in your debt!
1 AnswerBiology7 years agoIntegral involving inverse trig functions. Please help! Final is tomorrow!?
I can't seem to find an example of how to solve this in my lecture notes. Here's the question:
Integral of...
sin(3x) / (16 + cos^2(3x))
The answer I'm given on the review sheet is:
(-1/12) * arctan(cos(3x)/4)) + C
I see how the arctan part shows up because of the usual integral, but I can't seem to figure out what to do with the sin(3x) on top to get to that answer. What am I missing here?
3 AnswersMathematics8 years agoWHY is cabbage bad for lizards?
Ok, so I know to avoid cabbage in most cases or to feed it very sparingly at the least. I see that it is normally grouped with lettuce when talked about as foods to avoid feeding. Is cabbage also mainly water and thus not very nutritious, or is it high in oxalates like spinach, or is there another reason behind this? An answer would be much appreciated since google didn't seem to want to turn up anything :).
2 AnswersReptiles1 decade agoHome made media for beneficial bacteria in my tank?
If I think I understand what I've read so far about beneficial bacteria in my fish tank, would adding a few pieces of a regular clean unused sponge in a place that doesn't block water flow in my filter be beneficial? It's a very porous object with a lot of surface area and should therefore be a good place for bacteria to grow correct? I'm pretty sure that it'll work like that, I'm just no so sure how much added benefit it would have. My filter is fairly small since it is only for a 20 gallon tank. Any advice?

6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoPros and cons of Ammo chips?
Ok so I have a 20 gallon freshwater tank which currently has one red platy, two flame dwarf gouramis, and one guppy. My cori catfish recently died for apparently no reason; I've had him in there for about two months now, he was one of the originals. My other guppy I had died on me too, but he had just come from the pet store less than a week before he went, so I don't think it had much to do with my tank. I don't have exact numbers on my any of my tests, but when I took some water to petco they said everything checked out at acceptable levels, nitrites especially because I was having some problems with that for awhile. My pH was slightly low, but that was about it I just threw in some water conditioner to try to up it a little bit. Anyway on to the real problem... my water has been cloudy for quite some time now. It started, from what I can remember, a good few days before my last water change which was on Tuesday 12/1 (I did a 25% change). I was told it may be cloudy because of the fish I added which would put extra ammonia in the water. Would it be a good idea to put some ammo chips in my filter, which claims it helps remove ammonia, to help get rid of the cloudiness? I did a couple minutes of research online to find that it binds ammonia to the rocks with a chemical reaction and the ammonia itself doesn't break down for weeks which can throw off readings, but it still keeps it from being harmful. I know this can throw off the cycles and make my tank dependent on fresh ammo chips to keep the water safe, but would it hurt to just throw some in until the cloudiness stops and then let the ammo chips just sit there until they stop absorbing ammonia or take them out completely, only adding new ones when I have another spike? So I guess the main questions here are: Is it a good idea to use ammo chips to get rid of the cloudiness in the water? And what what are the pros/cons of using ammo chips short term and long term? Thanks in advance :)
1 AnswerFish1 decade agoIs it safe to put barbs with my platties, cory, and shark?
I have a relatively new 20 gallon freshwater tank and was told at petco that barb fish can be somewhat aggressive and should probably not be put in my tank. This coming from someone at petco, I don't trust so much considering I get different stories about animals from every single employee. I currently have a red wag platy, a sunset fire platy, a red tail shark, and (I believe) a bronze cory catfish. So the question is: would it be safe for all the fish to add any similar sized barbs once my tank is more established?
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoFor those religious people out there... what made you realize there was a god?
Did you physically see him/her/it? Did you experience something so amazing that you believe it couldn't have been the doing of anything else? Was it what your parents brought you up to believe? I'm just very curious about this and would like to know what people think... so what did it for you personally?
4 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoFreshwater temperatures?
I just set up a freshwater tank and I've noticed my temperatures won't drop below 80 degrees. At petco the little sign in front of the fish says they're all good for a range of 72-82 degrees, but then again I never really trust petco to begin with. As of today I just added a red tail shark, a red wag platy, a sunset fire platy, and one of those little catfish cleaner guys that sit at the bottom of the tank (I forget their name). My temperatures in my tank are sitting around 80-82 sometimes barely peaking into 83 and this is without a heater or anything; I ended up unplugging my heater completely. It doesn't seem like my room is this hot and it's not in direct sunlight or near a lamp or anything; I guess I've just gotten used to it. Is it harmful for my fish to have them in water at this temperature? If so, is there anything I can do to cool off the water? I'm really drawing a blank here as to how to do that other than making huge batches of treated ice cubes with water conditioner in it and that's not really practical. I'm hoping it's not much of a problem, but if anybody knows any advice as to how to make a tank cooler then please let me know.
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoMarble decoration in a freshwater tank?
Well since putting this into a search engine brought up nothing but those little colorful marbles made for fish tanks I thought I would ask here. I recently came across a small turtle decoration my grandmother got from bermuda and I was thinking of putting it in my fish tank. The whole thing is made from the stone marble not those little colorful pebbles. Is this ok to put in a freshwater tank? I know some rocks and things can throw off chemical balances and pH levels, but I wasn't sure about this? If I can how should I go about treating it to put it in? Would it be just a warm water rinse or something more complicated?
1 AnswerFish1 decade agoJust set up a new freshwater fish tank and my water is cloudy with no fish in it yet?
I just bought a 20 gal starter kit at petco; it came with the tank, an aqueon filter, a heater (which I'm finding I probably won't need for quite some time), and the hood with a 15 watt light. I bought the tank and set it up with the water and conditioner as well as some gravel after rinsing it two days ago. Yesterday I went out and bought some fake plants and a large rock to put in the tank, which I also put in after rinsing them. Last night I noticed my temperatures were still too high after turning down my heater so I unplugged the whole thing and left the lid open to help cool it off overnight. I woke up this morning to find the temperature was at 80 degrees which is in the high end of the acceptable range from what I'm told. The only problem is my water is somewhat cloudy now. It's nothing too horrible, but it doesn't seem as clean looking as it was last night. Taking a second look at it now, it might be an illusion from the change between day and night and how much other light is in the room, I'm not really sure, but I want to make sure I'm doing everything right before I start putting fish in this thing. I was just wondering if it would be possible for my water to get cloudy with no fish in it yet or if my eyes are just playing tricks on me. Also I could use some advice from anyone that has been doing this for awhile as to how often I should be changing my filter and doing water changes in the beginning compared to once the tank is more established. Plus any recommendations on products you may have found you needed or should have used in your own experiences would be useful as well. I already put the money into making this thing look nice and I want the fish to really thrive. Thanks for your time in advance :)
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoPutting a chip in my jetta?
I have an 03 jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg edition that I was considering getting tuned and putting a chip in. The only mods I've done to it are a cold air intake and a blow off valve as well as subs, but I don't think they're too relevant here. What would I be looking at cost wise and what are the pros and cons I can expect to get from doing this? Also with a long shot here: anyone know of any reputable place to get this done in the Houston area?

I like darker beers and liquors. Becks is one of my favorite beers and I can drink spiced rum like it's nothing. Anyone out there with similar taste have anything new to suggest?
