Shot in the dark.. when was the gene 'pale' discovered in D. melanogaster?
I know this is pretty specific, but I'm trying to write a paper on this gene (pale/ple) in D. melanogaster which is due tomorrow at noon. I can't seem to find any references pertaining to the actual discovery of the gene, though. Please cite where you found this information, I will forever be in your debt!
@Smeghead: I did come across this paper through flybase, but it doesn't seem to actually come out and say it is a newly discovered gene. Is that a generally accepted way to confirm first discovery?

www.flybase.org is the place to go for questions like this. Search for ple, and it'll pull up a page with pretty much everything you'd ever want to know about it. Scroll down to "other information", expand that, then "other comments". The earliest paper listed there describes its discovery.
