What's the difference between string theory and religion?

I'm not bashing string theory in general; it's just the ridiculous notion that there are infinite universes. What really angers me is when the same people that subscribe to this particular brand of string theory preach against religion. Let's summarize both BELIEFS:

Belief in god -

Pros: It offers an illustration of the universe that requires no further explanation.

Cons: There is no evidence for it nor is there anyway to obtain evidence supporting it.

Any hypothesis without evidence is philosophy. Unless string theory can produce a prediction of some new physics soon, the idea will be tossed as useless to scientists (and maybe to mathematicians as well). Many physicists have been skeptical for the past 10yrs whether it is worth the dedication of some of the greatest minds in theoretical physics.

Religion on the other hand doesn't need to correspond with reality for those who believe in it. They can continue to be proven wrong, and the followers will keep following.

This is the difference between science and religion--proof.

Go deeper - ridiculous or not, either one should be open to being proven, or at least very strongly supported. Both string theory and religion still fail to meet this criteria the last time I heard anything about either one.
