  • How do opiates cause euphoria and addiction?

Please don't read wikipedia to me; I've read everything it has to say on the subject several times. Based on their effects, the opiate receptors' ability to induce euphoria and create such a powerful addiction, I assume the reward system is involved in some way leading me to believe that dopamine is involved somehow. How? Does the activation of opiate receptors have a dopamine releasing agent effect? A reputake inhibition effect? Also, I don't entirely understand how GABA relates to opiates, but I have read that somehow it is released... Thanks in advance. :D

  • When will all the stupid athiest learn?

I really hate all the athiest I mean who do they think they are saying that I evolved from a monkey? I'm no monkey! And they're always talking about evidence, but if the big bang existed, why don't explosions create universes? If evolution was real, why aren't dogs occasionally born as cats? I know what I'm talking about; I took 8th grade science before I dropped out, but I guess it doesn't matter because eventually the harsh, vengeful hand of god will eternally torture them because he likes to watch the dissatisfaction of his creations.

  • What's the difference between sludge metal and grunge?

Aside from the vocals, what's the difference? I'm a big grunge fan, and I've listened to several of The Melvins songs, and I'm convinced that if Nirvana or Screaming Trees or someone had played the same songs (with different vocals obviously,) they would have been considered grunge.

  • Can anyone help me find this song?

I was at a bar yesterday, and I heard this song that was very good, and I would like to find it. I'm fairly certain it was by Jane's Addiction or at least it had the same lead singer, and the music itself (as in not the voice) had a slightly polished grungy sound that reminded me a lot of Nirvana's Nevermind. Unfortunately, I remember none of the lyrics, but does this strike anyone as familiar?

  • Does anyone realize that keeping interest rates artificially low...?

will lead to yet another recession once they rise up to what the market actually dictates they should be?

  • Why do state governments support colleges?

Why don't they let all colleges be private and use the money they're spending on them now for grants so that the money actually goes to kids that need it and not rich kids whose parents are fixated on a particular football team or whatever?

  • Why doesn't the government...?

Please read all of this question before answering. Why doesn't the government eliminate all welfare excluding social security and unemployment, cut corporate income taxes for the difference and raise the minimum wage? If the corporate income tax is lowered enough, we could avoid the inflation that usually follows a raise in the minimum wage, and we could prevent people from living too far below the poverty level while avoiding most of the couch potatoes that live off of the government. It would protect all productive members of society from poverty while punishing its parasites.

  • Why isn't the sky violet?

If violet has the shortest wavelength, then by the high school reasoning behind why the sky is blue, shouldn't it be violet? Why are stars blue shifted and not violet shifted?

  • Neurologically, why do people like to use alcohol and other drugs?

Drugs that affect dopamine and serotonin in some way are understandable, but that only crosses out MDMA, amphetamines, cocaine, and opiates as far as I know. What about the others like alcohol, NMDA antagonists, marijuana, and first generation antihistamines(or do they work like nicotine?)?

  • Second order homogeneous differential equation with constant coefficients?

Consider a mass attached to the end of a spring. According to Newton's second law, mx'' = -kx where m = mass and k = spring constant. If the mass is 1 kg; the spring constant is 1; the position of the system at time 0 is 1; and the velocity of the mass is 0 at time 0, find an equation that describes the oscillations of the spring assuming it is an isolated system.

  • What's the difference between string theory and religion?

I'm not bashing string theory in general; it's just the ridiculous notion that there are infinite universes. What really angers me is when the same people that subscribe to this particular brand of string theory preach against religion. Let's summarize both BELIEFS:

    Belief in god -

Pros: It offers an illustration of the universe that requires no further explanation.

Cons: There is no evidence for it nor is there anyway to obtain evidence supporting it.
