What are the best anti-virus/spyware/firwall programs for windows 7?

I recently installed windows 7 on my home PC replacing XP reluctantly but of course it wiped out all my security. Is 7 any more hacker resistant than XP?

The best security software for Windows is still Kaspersky. But some people complain about the price. I don't mind because I prefer to pay the $79.95 than getting my information stolen.

As mentioned above, my next recommendation is Norton, pretty good security for $10 less in price.

If you plan on buying security software, make sure you get one of the two above and that you purchase the Internet Security Suit.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    To answer your other questions...

Yes, Windows 7 is a lot more secure than Windows XP. A lot of the old security problems that Windows XP and Vista had have been fixed.

And also, the security software you were using on Windows XP should be available for Windows 7.

However, it's Windows Software. And I wouldn't trust Microsoft with their ''it's more secure than before.'' Since most people use Microsoft software for their user friendly features, most hackers also dedicate time looking for the vulnerabilities.

So.. keep it updated, and you should be ok.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you don't want to pay.

Here are my recommendations for free software:

    For free antivirus: Avira AntiVir

For free antispyware and antimalware: Windows Defender

For free firewall: Zone Alarm or Comodo

    For free behavioral protection: Threatfire

Also, you should keep in mind that you should never have more than one of the same type of software. And you can use Threatfire regardless of what other security software you're using.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My comments on other commonly known software.

Microsoft Security Essentials => It's currently rated as the second best free security software. Again, I wouldn't trust it because its from Microsoft. But it's pretty decent and it uses low computer resources.

Avast => It's currently rated as the third best free antivirus.

AVG => It's currently rated as the fourth best free antivirus.

Malwarebytes => It's pretty good for malware removal. But it doesn't prevent spyware.

SUPERAntispyware => It has the best free spyware detection. But it doesn't prevent them as well as Windows Defender.

Lavsoft Ad-Aware => Pretty stable free spyware remover. I noticed it removes a lot of cookies. But it might not detect hidden spywares.

Spybot Search & Destroy => Pretty lousy free spyware remover. But it does have a feature that prevents them. You need to manually update it daily.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments on browsers. I noticed that the replier above mentioned a couple.

Windows 7 comes with Internet Explorer 8, which I personally hate. I recommend using Firefox 3.5 because of recent vulnerabilities detected on IE8, for which updates haven't arrived yet.

    Edit:

The update for the IE8 vulnerability was released 2 days ago. Make sure you download it.

If you want free, I'd look at Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials combined with the Comodo Firewall.

If you don't mind paying I'd probably look at Norton Internet Security or ESET Smart Security -- those are both antivirus/firewall combos. (And I'd personally try to find a good deal on one of those rather than go the "free" route.)

7 is a little bit better with its included security features, but you should still run an antivirus at the least. I'd also keep in mind that whatever you were running on XP likely has a Windows 7 compatible version out now.

windows 8 sucks and here is why: -it does not make your computer faster...Microsoft just says that so they can get easy money from simple minded people like you and they fail to people like me who actually know stuff about computers, in fact windows 8 uses more power. operating systems do not make your computer magically faster, its the cpu,ram and the motherboard mostly. -it has no start botton -it is pretty much a tablet operating system to be used on a computer/laptop. there is more i am leaving out but since i dont own a computer with windows 8 i dont know. and some of the other people that answered saying dont listen to your clueless friend bla,bla,bla... you guys are the clueless ones and we know what is right. and windows 8 is NOT a improvement, it is a degraded piece of **** OS. Someone should step-in at Microsoft and change it.

There are less issues with software and Windows 7 than there was with Vista. So most of the 2010 versions of antivirus software are Win7 compatible.

Stopping spyware ('malware') is more than a one-time inoculation, folks.

This is about a weekly habit of cleaning 'nasty dust bunnies'

    from your personal computer.

In much the same way you clean your home with your favorite broom

and your favorite cleaning solvents, you will also need good tools

to clean spyware out of your PC.

Only single antivirus cannot help u out in tough situations ,

You need a combination of softwares to help protect ur PC .

Here is the combination that I use

Avast antivirus > Malwarebytes > Super Antispyware > Comodo Firewall .

u can use AVG or Avira FREE in place of Avast , thats ur choice

As Far as avast is concerned , u need to register for free , give them ur email address and they will send u a free licence key for avast (i.e. for 1 year ) and u are entitled to use the software for 1 year !

U can get the above on following addresses -

    Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

    AVG - http://www.free.avg.com/

    Avira - http://www.free-av.com/

    Malwarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    SuperAntispyware - http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

Any one of the following Firewalls -

    Comodo Firewall - http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

    Zone Alarm Free Firewall

    http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-...

These apps work in combo to protect ur PC , and provide rock solid protection against viruses ,and all are free !

    Good Luck

Maybe it is, but still, you will need antivirus software.

If you want a security suite for free, then you can get comodo antivirus plus firewall

    http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/antiv...

Or else if you want standalone antivirus and antispyware, then get Microsoft Security Essentials
