You will need a car to get around unless your are limiting your stay to the Downtown/West End area or Opryland Area. Cabs are plenty both places.
Nashville has no shortage of nice restaurants and decent hotels.
Logans and Cracker Barrel are popular chain restaurants in Nashville as are O'Charley's and Rafferty's/J Alexander's. All except Cracker Barrel have good bars.
Among best meat and three restaurants are Couser's Country Cooking across from Nashville Zoo entrance, Swett's (Airport among locations) Rotier's and Elliston Place Soda Shop near Vanderbilt/West End. These will give you bang for your buck. Couser's is run by the County Clerk's family and is easily my favorite.
Among fine dining the Palm in Hilton downtown has great lunch specials and the restaurant in the Hermitage (Nashville's only five star hotel) is outstanding. We have a Morton and Fleming's and Ruth Chris and others but the Palm's $17.95 business lunch is hard to top.
The main malls are Rivergate in the north, Cool Springs Galleria in the south and Green Hills just West of the Downtown/Vanderbilt area. Opry Mills is the only other thriving mall and is a mainly a tourist trap.
Opryland/Opry Mills/Music Valley Drive is tourist central but Music Valley Drive has some decent restaurants where locals eat the best being Cock of the Walk way down past the campgrounds. The Grand Ole Opry is right at Opry Mills.
Main drags are Broadway in Downtown as well as Church St.
Broadway runs into West End Avenue at Vanderbilt with lots of nice restaurants and Centennial Park/ Parthenon. Franklin Road Runs parallel to I-65 south and leads to the Cool Springs area there are many large houses and strip malls along the way. Gallatin Road is the main drag heading north from downtown to Rivergate. Ellington Parkway connects downtown to Opryland/Music Valley and is underused and usually has light traffic.
Where Broadway forks at 21st Avenue and West End (between downtown and Vanderbilt) you will find plenty to do taking either fork and I'd recommend exploring both.
21st will go past Vanderbilt and its hospital leading to Green Hills. Lots to see do on way!
West End goes past Vanderbilt and Centennial Park before becoming Harding Road and leading to Belle Meade Nashville main old money neighborhood.

You'll want to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, The Parthenon (a very unique art museum), The Nashville Zoo, and take a sightseeing cruise on the General Jackson showboat.
Some good restaurants are 417 Union has some great breakfast with tasty pancakes and omelette's. This restaurants also has some great desserts, for example, hot fudge sundaes. Arnold's Country Kitchen is another good breakfast spot with yummy biscuits and pancakes. Sole Mio is a good Italian restaurant. Great pizza and lasagna. Good selection of wine. Morton's and Omaha Steakhouse are both great places for steaks in downtown Nashville. Actually, all of the above restaurants I mentioned are located downtown.
