We've had a fair few not just good but great Kings and Queens so far: Richard the Lion heart, Henry V, Edward III, Elizabeth I and II, Victoria, to name the cream of the crop.
My pick would have to be Elizabeth I. She was the most balanced. She had all the qualities you want from a Monarch. She was passionate and caring. Poised and Elegant, Courageous and when require ruthless, and she played the political arena like the divine ruler she was. They don't call it the golden age for nothing.
Edward III in second place, closely followed by Victorian and HM Elizabeth II in third.

There are a lot I like.
Alfred the Great was well great. He stood up to the Vikings and taught his people how to defend themselves by building defensive forts. He also encouraged learning and literacy at a time when many thought it unnecessary. He was also just a good person.
William the Conqueror was awesome. He managed to invade and as his name suggests conquer England, which forever changed the cultural landscape of the land for what I believe was the better. His military dominance and no nonsense attitude also finally kept Vikings out of England and reined in out of control nobles. He also gave us Windsor castle and the Tower of London.
I'm also fond of Edward IV simply because he managed so much at such a young age and briefly put an end to the wars of the roses.

I think Queen Elizabeth I was very interesting, as she was our first successful female monarch, and she was Queen during a very interesting period, when england was turning from Catholic to Protestant, becoming a world power, the English theatre developed etc. Also she was Queen when the power of the monarchy was at its height, few other monarchs ever weilded as much personal power as she did.

Queen Elizabeth 1st. - Well done that lady in those days, being a spinster. (of course - she must have had a few good men behind her.)
The "Why England Only" part is because we didn't want to be too 'pushy' - being Protestant - while the rest of the 'world' prefered Catholicism - but being the Protestant Monarch of Great Britain should be a foregone conclusion and those who wish to can leave - but we have to be out of the E.U. so we can be 'our selves'.
It's being "Roman Catholic" which is the problem, and all Catholics are now "Roman" - A 'God Save The Pope' thing instead of, 'God Save The Queen' which they could untill quite recently.
It's hard to pick a second - mine is King George 3rd, isn't it Lord Lucan, (Lucan comes from St. Luke) but Queen Victoria must be 'high on the list' too.
It almost has one think there is something wrong with our menfolk - !!!

Hmm... I have to say Charles II. Maybe he wasn't the best ruler but Restoration England under his rule was fracking awesome. The stage and literature were finally flourishing again, and there were all these cool people like Johnny Wilmot and Nell Gwynn and John Dryden and others. There was lots of cool stuff going then. Sure the court was kind of wild and bawdy, but it is a very interesting period of History to study. And I love the fashions and splendor.

George VI (1895-1952). King during the Second World War, and posssibly one of the hardest working Monarchs Britain ever had. He pretty muchworked himslef into the ground (which was one of the reasons why he died early). He was almost pathologically shy and spoke with a stammer, but he worked hard to overcome these difficulties. He earned a lot of respect for refusing to move out of London in the Blitz (despite Buckingham Palace being hit) and his tireless tours of bomb sights. He gets my vote.

I agree with Ms Minerva about George VI for all the reasons she gave. The sense of national unity he and Queen Elizabeth provided during WWII matter a lot to the British people. Add to that he was never expecting to be King as that was expected to be his elder brother, until his elder brother got mixed up with Mrs Simpson.

Oh I would have to say George VI.
He was a painfully shy, stammering young man who was forced to assume the throne on the heels of a Constitutional crisis, and on the eve of a dreadful war.
With the help of a wonderful Consort, he was able to provide the leadership to see both the institution of the UK Monarchy and his country through one of the most difficult periods of its history.
He was a quiet, gentle man who accomplished all of this out of his desire to do his duty. One quite admires that.
The effort, according to his Consort, cost him his life.
The wreath which was the first to be placed near his coffin was from Winston Churchill.
The card read: For Valor

If it was the United Kingdom I would chose Queen Elizabeth II,But since it is only England I would Chose King Edward I (Long-shanks)
Because he is an ancestor of mine,I know it's quite silly the reason why I like him so much.
