Why do people ''make up'' answers?

I have noticed on maintenance & repair, some people ''make up'' an answer, when it is very obvious they don't know anything about the subject.

I've seen way too much of this type of thing, for several years now and sometimes it disturbs me, sometimes just makes me laugh, then there are times when I correct someone to keep the asker from making a mistake and causing themselves more grief than they're already in. I feel that a lot of the folks that come in to this section do so from other areas of answers, where a question requires an opinion for an answer, not necessarily facts or proper and safe procedures. Then they answer with what they, "think"is a good answer and they may be completely out in left field.

I for one will admit I do enjoy the points and talking with different folks from all over, but I only answer the ones in my field of expertise since I work on heaters and a/c's all day everyday (except for today) and have for a very long time. And yes I thoroughly enjoy this, especially when someone trusts my answers over the internet, and I would never steer them wrong. Thats the fun I get. I even like reading into their thoughts as they try to explain the problem, its somewhat of a challenge. Ive met some really nice folks.

I'm sure a lot of people do this as your describing(on all areas of YA)...but another thing to consider is maybe they really "think" they are right b/c they heard the info from a good friend,or they had their own experience not realizing that everybody/every situation is different.

For points? To blow smoke up someone's ***? Because they're bored? The possibilites are endless.

Because they think they are right, but you know better.
