Why is it wrong to list race when describing a suspect in a crime?
Just reading a police blotter report where someone shoplifting was described in great detail....except no race.. Gave approx. height, weight and age, said was bald, had goatee, black coat, white bandanna....but not what race he is.
Is it just me or is it counter-productive to even list that description missing that vital bit of info? How would I know if I see the guy?

In N.Y. if a crime is committed by a black man they won't say his or her race but if he is white or hispanic they make sure we all know! That is called reverse discrimination. We know what race he or she is because they call out if he is hispanic or white so if they say nothing about race we know exactly who they are talking about!
