    a.

It is the only answer that correctly says that the secession of the original seven states preceded all the other events. Some states did secede after the formation, but it is correct that some did secede before the formation of the confederacy. When reading a multiple choice question, always eliminate the obviously wrong answers. B,C and D are obviously wrong, because some states did secede before the confederacy and the battles took place after both those events. Therefore, while not complete, A is correct. They aren't asking you to write an essay, they are asking for the most correct answer.

Sha_Lyn's link is the first to pop up when you google, "history of the civil war". You could do that yourself and be spared the playground scuffle over spelling.

None of the above. The states did not succeed at the same time. Seven states succeeded before the formation of the confederacy, but the remaining 14 did not until after.

ETA: Oh wow, I used succeeded instead of seceded in my answer. Which BTW was due to spell check. I thought seceded looked right but spell check said it was wrong. Then again spell check always says that Rhode Island is wrong too and wants to change it to Rhodie Island.

Rhodie is apparently a derogatory term for an expatriate Rhodesian. Had I not been in a hurry to leave for an appointment, I would have looked it up. Sorry my bad for trusting spell check, but that doesn't change the fact that I am right. The southern states seceded throughout the civil war.

Funny how I am the only one to provide a link that backs up my answer.

ETA: I didn't goggle " history of the civil war." I yahoo searched "civil war timeline." LOL, but history place is actually one of the websites I have bookmarked.

    how about "B"

The confederacy would need to be organized before it can issue a sucession from the Union. Afterwards there would have been wars.

    A is correct.

And to the people who can't spell, it's "secede" and not "succeed". The word "secession" is right in front of you in the question, sigh.
