Sons of Anarchy first season?

I just started watching this season and am a little confused on a couple of things.

What is the IRA? and who or what is Sam Crowe?

How long ago did Jax's dad die, and how did Jax become VP if Clay hates him?

Any other important things that happen in season one that I should know about?

    IRA - Internal Revenue Agency, or Irish Republican Army

    And it's not Sam Crowe

    It's Samcro

    and it stands for Sons of anarchy motorcycle club riding organization I think

    Jax's dad made Vp I think, It never says.

    And Clay had Donna "Opies wife" killed
