What do you think of this character name?

If you were reading a book, what do you think of the name Breyla for the main female character? It's in first person, so it's only mentioned when it's said by another character.

Would this name annoy you if you read it several times over th course of the book?

How do you think Breyla would be pronounced? (I want to be sure all my readers would pronounce it the same way I do.) I am set on this spelling, so if it doesn't work, I'll have to chose another name altogether. Your honest opinions on the name Breyla would be very helpful. (And thank you, but I'm not taking other suggestions for namesat this time)

Thanks!

Update:

ha ha. Carpetbomb, your answer made me chuckle. I chose the name, and the spelling of it for egotistical reasons. The character's name is an anagram for my own, which is why I'm set on the spelling.

Update 2:

Amusing, but, no. My name is not barley. The anagram for the characters first and last name is made of all the letters in my first and last name. Both combined, not one and one. Her full name would be Breyla Seconder. Care to try and solve that jumble?

    I'd pronounce it Bray-la

Honestly, it doesn't really matter that your readers pronounce it the same way, if you think the name fits the character, then that's her name. Perhaps, of you're so worried about it, you can have one character pronounce her name wrong and she can correct? something along the lines of:

    "Oh, you must be Breela!"

    "Um, actually it's Brayla"

I don't know, just play around with it...

If I was reading it, I would think "now there's a name selected purely for originality, or more precisely, perceived originality" I would then go on to think, pondering some more "people think that it's original to make up their own names, but with everyone else doing it, it's the furthest thing from original you can get. I'm sure it was original at one point, but now, it's just plain common." then I might have gone on to think "A name, something like Mary, would have far more mystery and character amidst all these newly made up names. It's simplicity would suggest that Marys personality is where her appeal lies. Whereas Breyla just sounds like an attempt to glam up the character, indeed to add character!" followed by "But really, what I read is between the lines - that if you have to give the appearance of character through surface things like names then that just shows that there was something missing in the first place" then I might either go on to think "I don't want to read this book anymore" or else "I'm just being harsh - stop getting hung up on a name, and just see how the book goes. Review it when you finish it!"

Oh and I would pronounce it, like everyone else, as bray-lah

    So you're name is Barley?

    Breyla Seconder -

    You are Clayre Breedson!! ??
