    You want it to peak in the red. There will be higher excursions during normal conversation, that's not a big deal. If your console has peak flashers, they should flash occasionally but not stay lit. This will be about +/- 15% of where the red begins.

    If your audio has large excursions, you may consider using a compressor / limiter to even out things.

    You want to be closely to the beginning of the "red" most of the time. It can go above from time to time.
