How long will a round bale of straw last...?

...a horse stabled overnight (from about 4pm - 9am)? I've always used little bales, or shared a big one. I'm trying to work out how long a 4ft round bale of straw will last me so I know how much to buy!!

Update:

It's a question about straw, hence why I said "how long will a round bale of straw last"

=)

If you are meaning for bedding then an average round bale of straw contains about 10-12 little bales of straw, so you should be able to work out roughly how long a large bale will last you. As long as you have somewhere to keep a big bale where it is dry then it may be more cost effective for you. Having said that it is harder to carry armfuls of loose straw pulled from a big bale, and your portion control might not be as strict ie you might end up using more than you mean to. We paid £6 a bale(4ft ones) earlier this year, just to give you a guide.

If this is a question about hay you can purchase a round bale for 1 or 2 horses. I do all the time...I had 1 horse and a mini that would go through a round bale in about a month (that is if I am breaking it off and giving to them). I store my round bale under a tarp and have never had a problem with the bale going bad (and I live in a VERY humid area). I now have two horses and a mini and a round bale broken off will last just more than 2 weeks but if I put the bale out for free choice and 4x5 round bale only lasts a week (and there is alot of waste).

If you are actually using the straw as bedding I don't know because I don't use it.

At my place, it would last forever, as my horse's don't eat straw, they eat hay and we don't use straw for bedding. If you are calling hay, straw and mean hay, then that is a different question. If you only have one or two horses, sometimes it doesn't pay to buy the big round bales unless they are under a roof, as it takes one horse too long to eat a round bale and there will be much more waste...you will actually getting more for your money by buying the little square bales if you only have one horse.

For one horse/pony that bale sould last you about a fortnight.

Ive got two mares & a foal in at the minute & a big round bale has lasted me about 10 days.

If they are the big ones, we used to top up beds every day on deep litter and that would last about 2 weeks - this was 18 stalls. I think it might depend a bit on how messy/greedy your horse is!

Been wondering how you were. Missed your questions! Hope all is well.

A round bale of hay for one horse might last about 2 weeks. I wouldn't advise buying a round bale for just one horse. because it would take so long for your horse to eat it, it can go bad. Also there will be a lot more waste with a round bale.

so my 2 horses round bale lasts about 2 months so if you have 1 horse it wil probably last about 2 months.don't forget to cover it when it rains!!!!!!(i cover mine with a tarp)

depends on the size of the horse or pony but @ our stables it normally lasts about 1/2 to 2 weeks depending on how much it stales.

Depends on the size of the stall and how deep you want the bedding to be and whether or not your horse likes to snack on his/her bedding! Too many variables to advise you on that! :-)
