Did I do something wrong? Long story..?
I babysit my landlord's puppy five days a week.
I take her out either three times a day (9, noon, and 3) or I bring her over to my house to be with us. Otherwise, she sits in her crate till "mom" comes home.
Today, we had a doctor's appointment. I left the dog (and my own pup, same age, same litter) outside in my fenced in yard with my back door open so they could go in and out. I left her a message saying this was what I was doing.
She called me freaking out etc..., and I think this is the end of my dog babysitting days. (There are more details, mostly irrelevant, to this if interested.
For the record, the dogs are a large breed, Golden Retriever. I also have a fenced in yard that they cannot escape out of. They have been out there a lot before. I also live 20 minutes from town and have a half a mile long driveway to the nearest country road. I am also on a first name basis with all of my neighbors.
She also leaves her adult dogs outside access all day through a doggy door. They spend most of their day outside at their own leisure.

I would say it depends on the age, size and environment.
If you live in an area where there are wild animals or birds of prey, and the dogs are small, then you did something wrong.
If you live in an urban area where there are a lot of people and the dogs could be poisoned or stolen, then you did something wrong.
If you live in a suburban area, with a secure and well protected yard, and the puppies are large, then I would say the owner is overreacting.

Yes you did something wrong! NEVER leave any dog outside when there isn't anybody home. Both dogs could escape the yard and get hit by a car, be stolen, be poisoned, etc. If I left my dog in your care, yes, your dog-sitting days would be over. Sorry to be so blunt, but this was very irresponsible on your part. I'd be p*ssed as heck!

Well, I'd not leave her crated for that long per day - but that's just me.
I'd Never leave my dogs outside. When I leave the house, if they aren't with me, they are inside. A gardner or water meter guy could come over unexpectedly and open the gate. Also no telling what mischief they'd get into just exploring the back yard and bored.
But on the other hand, so what if you made one mistake, can't she forgive you and you just assure her it won't happen again.
