German WW2 medal? help please?

I have a medal that was in my Dads stuff. I knew he also brought a huge German flag home with him in 1945 but got rid of it in the 60's.

The medal is a dark gray metal. It has a German tin hat over a cannon that holds the ring attached to a red ribbon with a thin white/black/ white line in the centre.

One side of the medal depicts an eagle standing over a swastika.

The reverse of the medal reads WINTERSCHLACHT

IMOSTEN

1941/42

under this is a sword laying in wheat or grass. Any help in identifying this medal would be really appreciated thank you.How dad got his paws on it i do not know. He was in the RAF

Update:

Thank you for your answer and the link.

I thought it might have a link with the Russian front. So many brave soldiers fighting in summer uniforms, hardly any food and with little ammunition etc.

My dad told me, because the German army was deployed so fast their stores etc could not keep up with them.

So many young lives wasted. I'm so glad your father survived and got through it. Thankyou once again. I will keep this medal safe in rememberance of the soldier it was given to.

It is a medal given for service on the Russian Front. The translation is Winter Battle in the East. The helmet actually sits on a "Potato Masher" grenade. My father had one for serving in Stalingrad.
