Why are the tomatos sold in UK supermarkets so tasteless?

It never used to be like this. Tomatos used to be very tasty when they were only available in the summer.

Supermarkets use hothouse tomatoes which are picked green and artificially reddened (ripened). This causes them to be quite tasteless compared with vine ripened ones.

    Bah!

Don't come to Florida then they all come from South America and taste like a grainy watery bag of seeds.

I live in the "sunshine state" yet can't get a decent tomato or any fruit/veg grown in my own country.

I agree with you, I would rather have good ones in summer than crap ones all year round.

Another complaint that is unrelated, I live 2 miles from the Atlantic ocean. YET all the fish I buy comes previously frozen from Asia or raised on a farm and it all tastes like flavorless tasteless mush Mllions of people come here just to fish. So why can I not just buy a fish from the d*mn ocean? Oh well I could but to buy a local pound of fish I would have to take a second mortgage out. The fish I can afford is so full of mercury it is unsafe for babies and pregnant women! I love to cook, but with the deterioration and expense of fresh ingredients I will just have to start eating twinkis and Doritos. Sorry for the vent.

Is this globilization, because if so it really sucks.

I'm with you...tomatoes that are not home grown or bought from a farmer's market are very tasteless! Growers are picking their produce before it ripens to get it in supermarkets faster.

It's not just the UK, we have the same problem in the US. I only buy vine ripened tomatoes, never hothouse ones. It's worth the extra expense.
