Good question.
We "receive" the Lord Jesus Christ by faith. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)
We "receive" Him when we believe IN Him and ON Him, not just believing ABOUT Him, and trust Him for our salvation.
"Receiving" Christ involves repenting of our sins and believing that His shed blood paid the full price for our redemption and that His resurrection is the proof that His work at Calvary was accepted by God.

You accept the concept of the Savior and the atonement, which means you continually repent and try to live according to his gospel.
You dont just receive Christ once or get saved once. "Being saved" or receiving Jesus into your life means that you truly understand what it is that the Savior did for us. This means that you are constantly living your life in a way that proves this.
It is not a one time act, but a lifetime commitment.

Ian McCormacks testimony shows us how on our death bed, we can receive the Lord Jesus Christ, just because our mother is praying for us to pray to God and ask God to forgive us.
I watched his testimony today, and realize that his testimony goes with so much that the Lord has taught me or I have experienced on who the Light Who Is God is. The 4th video on this page is the one I saw.

I can't answer for other denominations. But as a Catholic we receive the Holy Spirit (Christ) through the Sacraments. Then again as a Catholic the Holy Spirit exists within our very lives through our works (deeds).
Saying your a Christian and living as a Christian are two different things for a Catholic.

By asking Jesus into your heart, which is by confessing your sins, repenting from them, believing that He died and rose again for you, allowing Him to be your Lord, your Saviour and your best friend for the rest of your life.

Different people will answer that in different ways. Pentecostals and similar believers are likely to focus on actions of the Holy Spirit. Catholics are more likely to have answers which involve the Eucharist. Atheists and agnostics, on the other hand, typically roll our eyes when we see questions like this.

To receive Jesus is to put your faith in Him and trust in Him. Many people say "receive" because they ask Jesus to come into their lives. They say this because there are many references in the bible to Jesus living in a believer. To have faith in Jesus you need to understand who he is and what he did for you.
