Comparing versions of Windows 7, when looking at 'Pro' edition - what does "productivity" mean in ...?

"Run many existing Windows XP productivity applications in Windows XP Mode."

That is the 6th of 10 optional features they compare at:

http://store.microsoft.com/Windows7/Compare

I know what 'applications' are and, I know what 'XP' refers to - but I've never heard the word 'productivity' squished in the middle - does anyone know exactly what they're getting at? (Or what are they hoping we may NOT infer from that statement? ... Yes, I am un-trusting.)

Saying "productivity applications" instead of just "applications" is Microsoft's weasel way of saying some programs like graphics-intensive games won't run properly under XP Mode. However, normal apps like Word, Quicken, Minesweeper, and countless other programs that don't use 3D graphics will run just fine.

Be aware you have to have a computer with hardware-assisted virtualization to use Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode. Microsoft has a tool available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa... to tell you whether or not your computer is compatible.

the biggest reason i understand of for finding out to purchase win XP at present is to rebuild a working laptop or computer that has crashed. they do no longer must be that old now, and win 7 won't run on them because of the fact they only cant cope with it. no longer enough space on no longer undemanding drives, ram, etc. Win 7 is a lot much less stressful to apply, and promises greater advantageous backup/image between many different helpful factors. an entire OEM of win 7 is accessible for around $a hundred and fifty i do no longer propose finding out to purchase utility ON EBAY. i do no longer think of i could flow lower back to win XP after win 7.

What they mean is that, any of your pre-existing software that will only run on Windows XP operating system will still run on Windows 7, and the productivity just means that it won't freeze or mess up.

Certain versions of windows give you the ability, if your processor supports it, to download a compatibility layer for windows xp, so that your windows xp apps can run side by side, without having to run a bulky emulator, thus "productivity".

Pro is not for Productivity. Pro means Proffessional
