Negril, Ocho Rios or Montego Bay?
This will be my first trip to Jamaica and just looking for a relaxing trip. Not a big partier. Will be traveling with husband and another couple. We are all in our 40's.
I have been reading about all three areas and all the resorts but I just can't decide. They all have something to offer. I want to hear from people who have visited these places and their recommendations.

I would pick Montego Bay. One of the main reasons is after a long plane ride I don't want a long taxi ride. the airport in in Montego Bay and if you go to Negril or Ocho Rios it is at least another hour. there are plenty of things to do in Montego Bay and it is a safe place to be. Most of the big resorts aren't very near downtown Montego Bay, they're kind of out of town. there are many trips that you can go on from the resort. Most are in air conditioned vans just for the tourists. visit a plantation, go on a raft ride down a river, and if you're adventurous do the zip line canopy tour.
Security is very good at resorts, you can't get on the property without a wrist band. Do venture away from the resort though so you can see Jamaica and not just more tourists. It is a beautiful island.

I have been to Jamiaca 3 times and have visited all of those locations. For a relaxing and laid back trip I would definately recommend Negril, or Runaway Bay. Negril has a 7 mile beach. its also has beautiful cliffs, and from Negril you can catch the best sunsets. It has small tiki bars lining the beach where you can get some OUTSTANDING local food. I believe its about 1.5 hours from the airport.
Ocho Rios is also very beautiful but as previously mentioned, the cruise ships do let off there so there is more tourist activity. Excursions etc. but it has Dunns River Falls which is a large waterfall and I love it there.
When I go, we always stay in Montego Bay becuase it is only a 5 min drive from the airport, and the airplane traffic really isnt a bother, But it does not have the miles of beach that you can walk on, or the great sunsets.
No matter where you go in Jamaica, if you leave the resort, which I recommend, you will be approached by locals looking to make a buck. But on the other hand, I have found Jamaicans to be extremely friendly, welcoming, and laid back. We leave the resort all the time and visit local bars and hangouts at all hours and I do not feel threatened. just don't go out alone. 1 time I even dropped money out of my purse and a jamaican ran after me to give it back.
From what it sounds you are looking for, I would say Negril. Tons of beach, sunsets, and the best food I have found on the island. Also, the previous suggestion of checking Trip Advisor is a great one. I have found some outstanding places that I never would have chosen that way. People who have been there know where the gems are! Good luck. Irie Mon!!

Negril is the best, most laid back and chill. It's not really a party scene, alot of smaller beach bar shacks down on the beach and usually some live music someplace everynight.
The cruise ships let off in Ocho and Montego Bay so it's much more touristy, more hustlers, etc.
Don't go all inclusive. I highly recommend CoCo La Palm. It's inexpensive and very nice, not AI but you do get free breakfast. The hotel is very nice, the whole place is a tropical garden, the rooms are like villas, if you get a jr suite which is still cheap you get an entire 2nd floor balcony. THey got a nice restaurant a bar and snack stand on the beach and on Mondays they have free appetizers and drinks for guests.
Go read on trip advisor some reviews, its much better than sandals or any of the ais, its also got probably the best location and is one of hte nicest hotels for a cheap price.

Negril and Runaway Bay are the safest places to go. Negril is a long bus ride and the driver will actually stop at a bar and let you buy beer for the road. If you go to Run Away Bay, Spend one day in Ocho Rios and take the walking tour through the famous waterfall. There will be a chance to shop in the Ocho Rios shops before you return.

Rachel is giving you good advise. I prefer Negril. or Runaway Bay. Both are long bus rides. More off site activities closeby in Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay. I would stay away from Montego Bay. The resorts are more located in the other area's.

For you guys I recommend Ocho Rios....its quaint, quiet, but with lots of activities should you decide to do them.
Montego Bay is Ocho Rios on steroids, too busy, too many ppl, too many hustlers. Negril is nice, but it can get rowdy, things to do are too far apart, its more expensive than other places ( don't know why ), and with all the hotels lining the beach side, it looks like Florida, not Jamaica. Ochi is your best bet for your 1st time.

Great idea for your 5th anniversary. Forget Montego Bay, just a nice place to land and get out of in my view. Ocho Rios if your going to spend lots of money doing tours everyday. We, wife and I do Negril now. We stay at THE ADULT resort so we can enjoy our adult self's fully. Plus Negril has other things to do as well. This trip our plans are a Catamaran afternoon/evening ride with friends, a walk along the beach to 3 Dives for dinner and if I can get myself moving a tour to the rum plant. Mostly "sand gravity" takes over for us and we are only able to get one trip away to happen. This being our 5th to this resort we think we can get out more then the once. The water is clear and great to snorkel in or dive if you have a PADI dive card. Take thick water shoes to Jamaica due to the sea urchins. I have always used my own mask and snorkel as well but they are offered for free at the resort we go to. Easy to not get pick pocketed, do not take anything to have stolen. I stick some cash in an inside pocket of my shorts and the wife tucks a bit in her swimsuit. We leave ALL jewelry at home other the cheep plastic so there is nothing to steal. Where you stay will affect the cost along with what time of year and who you book with. I have listed one of three travel agents we use below. He knows a lot about the resorts he list and if you have some flex as to when you go there are weeks he sets up groups for better rates. ** adding a second one that we also use for our March Trip for the better prices**

I will recommend Montego Bay because it has its own International Airport...And to those who think that My Beautiful Country is a GHETTO ISLAND you are WRONG...I am a jamaican and I am proud we have the fastest man in the world (Usain Bolt). Yes, I know there are Ghetto Towns mainly in the Southern Part..but still look in the USA there are even worse GHETTO areas in that country. Anyways if you coming to Jamaica , `You welcomed MON`. Jamaica is one of the most cultural places in the Caribbean...We have Indians, Chinese, Africans(no suprise), White, Arabic and We also have many Religions.....And since they were selling GANJA not Ganza tell Security or Police.
