My husband and I own a restaurant, do we "have" to pay our 15 year old the same as our other employees?

I would think that part of the time she is there is the same as my husband and I working there. It's a family business and we just started and we don't pay ourselves yet. So as part of the family, I feel we don't need to pay our child as the others that we have hired.

Update:

If I could get her to work as much as the other employees I would have no problem but sometimes I get the same attitude at work as I do at home. Right now we pay her for half the hours she works and the other half we consider helping the family. I do hope our restaurant grows enough that we can all reap the rewards.

If she works as hard as the other employees she should be paid equally. It beats paying her an allowance for doing nothing and it might teach her some very important values. Responsibility with money and commitment to a job, being 2. Besides you may be able to write it off on your taxes?

AS your son and if you and your husband are the owners you can pay him as much as you want to because tecnicly he is a part of an owner. There fore he should take on responsiblity for the restaurant for what ever pay there is for him.

Actually, you do NOT. You are completely correct. If you daughter is EVER expecting to reap the benefits of the business, she should be expected to work for it.

You don't really need to. Now, if he starts demanding it, and says something like he'll leave if you don't, then I would.
