Buying quality items and taking care of them so they last can often be financially smarter than buying something that's cheap and cheaply made. Taking care of your things is the most important aspect of this point. Do the maintenance on your car, change the air filter on the heating system, and so on.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
This is why Consumer Reports (and other companies like it) exists.
Ever heard "get what you pay for"? Sometimes it's true....sometimes it's not.
