What is this heirloom of my house?

Heirloom

Heirloom tomatoes in the hands

Of a prince of France,

Beckoning from the glossy page

Of Gourmet Magazine,

Appealed to the eye of a son

Sitting at a kitchen table

Who proposed to his parents a trip

To feed the deferred dream

His mother long had nurtured of travel.

A mother, a father and a French chateau

Made memories for a lifetime,

And when they returned there was joy

And when death came too soon

Uninvited, to dine, and the wine

Was all poured out

And mom was suddenly gone,

The memory of that last trip

Remained fragrant

Like a ripe tomato in a summer field.

Update:

Oh, I didn't go on the trip, actually. Just the two parents, like a second honeymoon... but I see what you're saying.

I can see what your saying, however, there is I believe more that can be gained from the picture you’ve painted and a stronger rhyme I believe would give it more impact.

I see your poem like this:-

A prince appeals to the eye of a son

From a glossy page of a Gourmet Magazine

    Sitting at a kitchen table

A young boy with a deferred dream

    Mother, Father and I

Making those memories of a lifetime,

Mother who longed nurtured of travel

Of French chateaus, and red wine

Happiness is a ripe tomato in a summer’s field.

Drawn by a little boy with a crayon

They returned with joy, but life poured out

    And mom was suddenly gone,

The memory of that trip remains fragrant

But when death comes, it comes too soon

Uninvited, it dines, upon the wine of life

Unabated it has no wish to commune
