Who is the author of this statement and what does it mean?

The statement is the first part of a pretty famous poem by Namoi Shihab Nye, and the poem is titled 'Kindness'.
It suggests that to know what kindness really is, you must 'lose things'. It then says 'feel the future dissolve in a moment', which is probably implying for the reader to imagine that tomorrow never existed or was lost.
You should read the entire poem to get a good idea of what it's talking about. Basically however, my interpretation is that to understand what kindness is, you have to experience the sufferings of someone else, lose something, and in turn you will be kind to them.
