Do you agree that gym class/PE needs to be mandatory and more of a priority in grades K-12?

First let me say I think we need a complete overhaul in the way gym class is conducted and the curriculum needs to switch focus. For me, gym class was an hour of humiliation, teasing, exclusion and offered little education on how to live a healthier life style. Gym was a time for the jocks to show off leaving the rest of us sidelined, bored and discouraged. When I heard there was an option to get out of gym class in high school I jumped at the opportunity. Even though I was overweight, lazy and knew I needed gym to help me be more active, my frustration and fear of further ridicule kept me far away from the boys locker room and gym class. I know there are many others who have felt the same way I did back then and would have benefitted from a more balanced curriculum that gave us a more solid understanding of living healthier lives while providing activities that didn't segregate the athletes from the less athletically gifted. With PE now only being required for one year in high school in many states (most of the kids don't continue with gym class after freshmen year), I think we need to step back, find out how to make gym more accepting, fun, and beneficial so that kids of all skill levels want to participate. Would you all agree something needs to change when it comes to educating kids about healthier lifestyle choices?

Update:

As with any other class in school I agree that the ones who excel should be allowed to do so without feeling held back by kids who don't grasp concepts as fast. For kids who excel at academics we have honors and gifted programs but not for practical education classes like gym. The guys who excel in sports should join the school team and use that as their platform to demonstrate their skills. During gym class, they should be trying to assist the less gifted kids improve their skills so they don't feel badly about themselves. At that age, acceptance and the concept of self is really developing so it is important to have a supportive environment that helps kids form a better self image.

We absolutely need better physical education. Part of the problem is the grading for effort mentality. If someone is a better athlete he should receive a higher grade, just as someone who is better at math should receive a higher grade. Your math teacher didn't give an A for effort, why should a PE teacher? As it stands now, it isn't treated as a real class and so people don't have put any real work into it. Just show up, shoot a few hoops, and take your B.

I completely agree, however I doubt anything will ever be done about it. The problem is that school districts don't have enough money, so many of them are already cutting back on other programs like art and P.E. There are only two ways to make up enough money to pull this off, either raise taxes in the area or cut the budget from another program. I would say that our entire school system needs revamping, but it would do me no good because people will complain about even the smallest raise in taxes and I don't want to stress an already over tense budget to the breaking point.

So I agree wholeheartedly, the only issue is that money will stand in the way of something like this happening, so I ask, where are we going to find the funds to pull something like this off?

America is fat. Gym class helps, but for those poor kids that are already overweight, there needs to be something more. Like better lunch food. But that's a whole other topic.
