The "hero vampire" aka Edward leaves Bella to go to Italy to see if he can piss off the council of the most powerful vampires so they will kill him. He thinks he causes too much trouble for Bella and puts her in danger too much.

Nope, this is only the second book of four.
Do yourself a avour, read Breaking Dawn. Jacob (werewolf) belongs in Bella's life, but not in the way we think.
Edward is Bella's soulmate (ironic I know).
