Can you name the biggest change from book to movie script in The Lord of the Rings?

There was a major change in the storyline when transitioned from book to movie, (mostly because without this change one of the movies would have been 4-5 hrs long).

Well, the most obvious change is the entire ending of the story. Frodo and co came back to the shire to find it completely destroyed by Sauruman while they were away. The war came back to their own front doors. I get why they changed it for the movie, but that doesn't make me happy about it.

The next were changing the fundamental characteristics of some of the main characters. Turning Aragorn into the reluctant hero who was only becoming king because that's the way the journey ended up rather than every step in his life being an intentional step toward that goal since the age of 20. Faramir kidnapping frodo to take him to Denethor...*shakes head* don't even get me started on that. Then there's freaking Arwen....arwen doing ANYTHING beyond giving her seat on the ship from middle earth to frodo at the end of the book is a departure from the story. She was nowhere near frodo when he fled the nazgul at the fords of bruinen. He made that ride alone and stood alone against all nine. Wounded and broken, he stood his ground against them. So much strength was taken from the hobbits and given to other characters or simply glanced over and made to seem unimportant. There were several others...but there really isn't room in this post to list them all. And I can't do it without ranting. I'm a huge fan of the books and have been since I was a small child. The movies were a huge disappointment to me.

    1. Some of the characters (from the book) never had any script in the movie.

For example Elladan and Elrohir (Elrond's twin sons) showed up in the third book (when Aragorn and the Rohans were marching to Minas Tirith.

Or when Glorfindel meets Frodo and company in book one (Arwen does this in the movie)

The Council of Elrond in book 1 had Gandalf talking nearly half the time, but in the movie... I believe Gandalf never really opened his mouth. (It also had Glorfindel and Erestor talking)

    2. A couple of details here and there that were missing (it adds up eventually)

When Boromir died (1st book), Aragorn and Legolas sings a lament for him

Tom Bombadil is not present in the 1st book
