What type of substances cause numbness on contact?

I'm not talking about illegal substance, I just have an idea for something. Like in the sour throat reliever, chloroseptic, what are the active ingredients in it, as well as any substances that would have the same effect. Most preferably edible.

Generally anything ending in "caine" is a topical anesthetic: benzocaine, lidocaine, novacaine, even cocaine! There are plenty of other substances that can do that also. The ingredient in Chloraseptic that causes numbness is phenol. Halls cough drops use menthol as an oral anesthetic.
