HP Book 7 question: Elder Wand?

My brother is up to the part in book 7 when Harry defeats Voldemort. Right before he does he goes into this whole explaination of why the Elder Wand is his and not Voldemort's. My brother''s asking me questions and I haven't read the book in awhile so I need some help. I looked over the book but I'm still very confused. Can someone explain IN DETAIL what the Elder Wand ownership sequence was? How did Dumbledore get it and what was the significance of the whole Draco not killing Dumbledore? How did Draco become master and not Snape? ANd why is Harry master if Draco's not dead?

I was confused by that part too. I've only read them once though :-P

Anywho, I found a website that explains all about it. There's more info about the Elder Wand if you're interested.

"...it eventually ended up in the ownership of the wandmaker Gregorovitch, who was trying to duplicate its powers. It was stolen from him by the Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald, who used it to cause havoc in Europe until he was defeated by Albus Dumbledore. The ownership of the wand then passed to him. Many years later, Severus Snape killed Dumbledore, who requested that Snape kill him to save him from a more agonizing death, and because this act was agreed on, Dumbledore would not be 'defeated', so the powers of the elder wand would be nullified. This led Voldemort, who desired the Elder Wand to conquer Harry Potter's and to render himself invulnerable, to believe ownership of the wand was Snape's, and had Nagini murder Snape so ownership would pass to him.

However, Harry Potter deduced that the true owner was in fact Draco Malfoy -- before Dumbledore died, Malfoy had disarmed him and unknowingly won possession of the wand. Nearly a year later, Harry disarmed Draco and unknowingly became the wand's master. "

Okay...Grindelwald stole it from a wandmaker, and then Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald and received the wand. Because Draco worked out all the details and was the one to corner Dumbledore, he was the mastermind behind his death and therefore received the true credit. Though Snape uttered the final curse, Draco Malfoy set the whole thing up. When Harry yanks Draco's wand away among others when they are escaping the Malfoy Manor, he conquers Draco's wand, all of Draco's wands, including the Death Stick a.k.a. Elder Wand

*deep breath* OK! Dumbledor got the elder wand from Gwindlewald, if I'm not mistaken, who I insist he had a 'relationship' with *hint, wink*. Draco got the upperhand of Dumbledor because Dumbledor couldn't change Draco's mind. Snape is not the owner of the wand because he did not 'defeat Dumbledor'; it was the plan to kill him. Dumbledor was dying, anyway, and asked Snape to kill him so Draco wouldn't have to. Draco got ownership of the wand because, again, Dumbledor failed to save him, which was his goal, meaning that Draco got the upperhand over him, even if Draco didn't know it. Harry got the upperhand of Draco when he stole Draco's other wand, making Harry its master.

    Again, the sequence.

Gwindlewald is killed by Dumbledor, Dumbledor gets wand.

Dumbledor is 'defeated' by Draco, who disarmed him and put him in his mercy, passing ownership to Draco.

    Snape kills Dumbledor.

Draco is 'defeated' by Harry, who disarms him and steals his wand (even though it's not the Elder Wand), and ownership of the Elder wand is passed to Harry.

    Voldemort kills Snape.

Harry deflects Voldemort's killing spell back on him.

Okay so first the Elder Wand was Dumbledore and it remained his all the way to his death. He planned on Snape killing him and taking the wand from him, but because of how the wand works since Malfoy disarmed him in the tower it became Malfoys. Voldemort thought it was still Dumbledores so he robbed his grave for it. He was mistaken. It was Harry's because weeks before Harry fought Voldemort he took Malfoys wand from him by force which made the wand Harry's. so Harry had the wand.

    Hope I helped.

Oh man, I haven't read the book in awhile either, but from what I can remember...

Dumbledore got the wand when he defeated Grindelwald. Then, when Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore at the end of the 6th book, he became master of it, although nobody knew it at the time. Then when Harry defeated and disarmed Malfoy of his Hawthorn wand at the Battle of Hogwarts, he became the owner, even though Malfoy wasn't using the Elder Wand. It doesn't matter if the Elder Wand gets defeated, it only matters if the master of it gets defeated.

ok well this is sort of confusing to me too! what i got was that dumbledore got it from grindewald whom he defeated in a duel. grindewald was imprisoned and never able to come out. draco didnt kill dumbledore BUT he was the cause of dumbledore's death!! it wasnt snape becuz snape and dumbledore AGREED!!!! snape promised to kill dumbledore so technically he did cause dumbledores death. it was draco. and even though draco is not dead, harry claimed draco's normal wand in the whole malfoy manor battle thing. so all in all, harry is the true master of the elder wand...

Source(s): confusing huh? but ive read dh like 10 times or more so i know every detail

The most complicated of all Harry Potter characters. Even from Book 1, he intrigued me. It goes beyond being upset by his nastiness and scathiness against Harry. His character always left you wondering the reason behind his actions. You feel there is more to him than plain old villain. At the end of Book 6 I was pretty sure that he would be a good guy. I refuse to believe that Dumbledore was simply hoodwinked and he was wrong to trust Snape. Before the final book came out, there have been a number of theories that Snape loved Lily Potter. I said then that I didn't think so because it would be so mundane and not befitting the complicated character he projected. But JKR proved me wrong. I thought it would be cheesy but the way JKR presented it, was great. You didn't feel it was mushy at all. I liked him already as a character in Book 1. I liked him better when I watched the movie because he was played by Alan Rickman, the epitome of the English villain!!! (Remember Die Hard before it got harder and hardest?)
