Gay Marriage, Christian Haters?
I was walking down the street then pop I had a spontantous thought...
Are most athiests only pro-gay marriage because most Christians are anti-gay marriage?
Also parallel world thinking: Do you think most athiests would be anti-gay marriage if Christian were pro-gay marriage...
O_o?
Edit: when I said Christian Haters...I meant Christians who are haters....k

No.
Most atheists are pro gay because they believe in equal rights.
Also being an atheist doesn't make you anti-theist.

Everyone should have equal rights in this country if there truly is a separation of church and state. I'm all for gay marriage and I am an Atheist. The only reason there is opposition to gay marriage is simply because the bible says it's against god and it's something different. A 2000 year old allegorical book and a magic space man do not influence my decisions, I am my own man. That is why I am for gay marriage. If the Right happens to allow for gay marriage I would be happy to see maybe they've made a turn around in realizing that religion does not work in this day and age and maybe there would be more common ground between Christians and Atheists.

Not me. I seriously think people should be allowed to marry those they love. My atheism has nothing to do with it.
If Christians favored gay marriage, it would merely be one less reason to despise Christianity.
I appreciate that you've had this insight and admire that you've bothered to actually ask (rather than telling me what I believe) but, as far as I can see, my pro gay marriage position is unrelated to my atheism. I'm from the San Francisco area and have had many gay friends (I'm straight). I mostly just want people to find happiness however they can.
Lastly, and let's be clear on this--it is the institution of Christianity I hate, not individual Christians themselves. ...though some Fundies do challenge my patience.
Edit: Yes, I did take it wrong. Sorry. Since you didn't intend it to mean,"those who hate Christians," I'll now bet you're not even a Christian yourself. In such an emotionally loaded forum, it's deceptively easy for people to seriously misunderstand each other's intentions.

Well considering I'm a gay male atheist, and I oppose gay marriage (and straight marriage for that matter) conducted by the state, I'd say you've got a bit of a hole in your underlying assertion.
Personally, I think the state has no business doing marriage at all for anyone. Marriage is a social concept. The union of two consenting adults is all the state should be concerned about.

No. I'm for gay marriage because I believe in equal rights. I wish Christians would be Pro-gay marriage.

No, a number of Christians are also in favor of gay marriage, and I happily side with them on this issue.
Gay marriage is a civil rights issue. Denying them the same marriage rights that I enjoy just isn't right. Consider that 30-40 years ago, this same battle was being fought over interracial marriage, with the same groups lined up on either side.

This popped in my head while reading your comment... how can any supposed individual that claims to be of a religion based on human compassion, (Jesus) be so much against their brothers and sisters no matter what they do that does not harm others?
Another contradiction to add to the endless list.
But then again, you might be on to something. I think some may like to just disagree to piss others off. When it comes to gay marriage and myself, I do not care either way.

I don't hate anybody.
I'm actually *not* "pro-gay marriage." I am firmly, however, pro equal rights.
It just so happens that the former falls under the latter. Go figure.
And frankly, I don't base any of my thinking on what christians do or don't believe or support. As long as it's consenting adults that are involved, I don't really care who marries whom.
Peace.

I began fighting for equal rights for homosexuals when I was a practicing Catholic.
And the vast majority of Christians that I personally know are for same sex marriage as well.
So in my case, no. I am for gay marriage for the same reason I am for interracial marriage- equality.

No, it's because the anti-gay marriage lobby is primarily motivated by religion. Without religion to motivate them, people are more inclined to do the normal decent thing of staying out of other people's private lives.
