Christians, do you feel controlled?
I keep noticing on here references that religion is there to control people but my experience has been nothing of the sort. It could be that my mindset had similar morals and ethics anyway so I am not really constrained from much but is anyone honestly feeling locked down by it?

Ppl who don't really have a personal relationship with God can see religion as a set of rules, or as controlling & restricting. But once someone takes the time to get to know the God of the Bible, they realize the freedom He brings. Many ppl were "out of control!" before God touched their lives. "He who the son sets free, is free indeed." Now, I'll admit that the longer I've known God, there have been times when I thought He was requiring something of me that I just couldn't give, or He was expecting far too much! But everytime I've chosen to obey Him in spite of my doubts or questions, the blessings and rewards afterward were so phenomenal that it was more than worth it. We are always free to choose to disobey, but then we forfeit some really great blessings.

Yes alot of Christians get wrapped up in the religion but that's NOT what Jesus wanted or preached. He wanted us to unconditionally love one another. He wants a relationship with us. Its not about how much time or money we spend in the building called church. Its the relationships we build and how we treat people on the outside of its walls. God gave us free will so that we are in control of ourselves. If something or someone is controlling you. I choose to belief in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I don't always go to church and I'll be a sinner as long as I'm in this body. Bottom line - follow Christ not Christians

When I was a child and thought as a child I believed that I was being controlled. However, when I grow up and I found the Son of God and His Father, I understood that they do not control me. My parents and the religious system that I was raised in controlled me.
I found that God and His Son give us the ability to choose for or against them. There is NO control when we are given this choice.

Yes, I feel controlled. Of course I feel controlled and I thank God He controls my life. I remember before I accepted Christ as my Savior that I was uncontrolled and did what I wanted. Since then I am now controlled by the Holy Spirit. This controlling is not something negative. It is positive and it is good for me. Don't mix control of the Holy Spirit with being controlled by some preacher or religious denomination, they are not the same. Remember, we as parents control our children (well some do) for the good of our children. Imagine if parents just let their five year old child go out the door by himself and let him return by himself. We would be horrified with such a thought. So it is with being controlled by the Holy Spirit. I am controlled out of God's love, not man's manipulation.

damn, I still get plagued by Catholic guilt. I could barely enjoy a joint in college.
But no, after going to some spiritual retreats with minimal emphasis on religion (think meditation, Buddhist teachings) and reading the Bible, I came to peace with my beliefs, left the Catholic church, and became free. Now being different is hard, and adhering to Christian values but hey, nothing worth doing is easy. But i feel free and do not adhere to sola scriptura. I have a great idea of what God is but I don't know for sure and thus will not kill anyone over my beliefs. WHo am I to defend God? And I question everything I hear. Be a shepherd, not the sheep.

As a matter of fact I feel freedom with my religion I have never felt constrained by it.
It seems like there are so much doors that are open when you have GOD in your life.
GOD Bless!

Any religion is meant to control the mind set of people. If you follow any practices of such religion, then yes you are controlled.

Coming to God is a matter of free will and a matter of choice, so I for one don't feel controlled. Secondly, I had left my faith for many, many years before I came home. I wasn't "compelled" to follow one path or the other. It feels great to be home, by the way :)
God bless.
