I have a book I need to throw away, but I feel guilty!?
It's an old paperback "The Source" by James Michener, probably published well over 20 years ago, maybe even 30. It's missing the front and back covers and pages are coming unglued.
I'd feel SOOOOO guilty if I threw it away, but what else can I do with it? Please, make me feel better about throwing it out, or give me a suggestion as to what I can do with it!

I know how you feel. I hate throwing books out. If it comes down to it, when the bookshelves are full, I put my paperbacks out to charity shops so that someone else can have the benefit of them. If they are badly damaged, as yours seems to be, then it has to be the recycling bin. At least the paper gets a new lease of life. Reborn; maybe even as another book. Sad but necessary so don't feel too bad about it.

Your library probably wont accept it if it is so damaged but try. Any thrift/donation store will take it, pu it in the donation bin and they won't have a chance to reject it :P
I like quizzles idea :P saw off the leg of a table.
Another thing you could do is get an old, small coffee table and glue the pages to the table. age them with coffe or something cover the table in about three layers of pages and laminate the table with clear laminate or a clear paint finish. A lot of work but looks really cool and your book won't be a waste! It's a great conversation starter with visitors too. That way you can find out what books they like.

When you start losing pages from wear, the book is worthless. I cant stand reading a book and find even 1 page missing. So give it a proper burial in the trash, It had a good life.

you could donate it! lots of charities are looking for books.
or, sell it at a second hand store
or, at my place, we have events where you donate your books and they sell it for you.
lots of answers, but if you have to throw it away, its ok. i love books too, but i wouldnt keep something like that either; when something is too old to be useful, isnt the best thing to do is to let it go in peace? if you want to use it until the pages crumble, then... that's up to you. consider it preserving the book's dignity before its too late.

Rebind it, recycle it, see if anyone you know would like to read it. here's 2 sites dealing with what to do with old books.

Use it to support an uneven table. If you don't have any uneven tables you could try sawing down one of the legs so that it is shorter

You could donate it to your local thrift store.
You could donate it to your local library. (They do re-bind books)
You could donate it to a book collection charity.
You could sell it in a yard sale.
Many possibilities, all of which I have done before. I hope this helps!

Check with you local public library, they may accept it and rebind it for their shelves.
