Well these days not much although the Conservatives are still a better option .

Traditionally the Conservatives are exactly that conservative , their policies are more frugal and tend to focus on a healthy economy . They are stricter on crime and generally stronger an more patriotic .

Traditionally the Labour party were socialist , if they ever did get in power they wasted money the country didn't have and bankrupted the country and society . Eventually they realised that their socialist policies made them unelectable , so the changed into New Labour . Now they are capitalists who pretend to be socialists but still bankrupt the country .

The original concept between the 2 main parties was :- Conservative stood for monied peoples of the UK and offered them choices so that they could continue to hold on to there money and land etc and increase its value. The Labour party was for the workers - defending there rights etc and to make there lives and working conditions improved and more acceptable for them - 'in the beginning'. After the 1950's Labour voters started to get a little richer themselves and - some - not wanting to be called 'working class anymore' started voting for the Con: party and Labour seeing the problem started offering policies like the Con:party so as to win back those voters. Fast-forward 40yrs and the 2 main parties were identical in all there policies being offered to the voters - disguised to look different (by there wording) but inline with each other - so really offering the voters 'no choice at all' - it became a matter as to whether the voters either preferd 'Blue of Red' colours leading the country and then the candidates personalities started to overwhelm the policies offered and its been that way ever since. Just like the US elections its all about the looks of the candidate (example:JFK) as much as the policies on offer - election style 2010. Whoever 'you vote for will not change anything' as the policies on offer are the same - and all candidates have a 'hidden agenda' - those being the things the voters would never vote for - so these politicians 'hide them' and 'inforce them' when/if elected to the surprise of all the voters who new 'nothing' about these policies that have suddenly appeared - all parties are guilty of doing this. No matter whats said to explain political parties/attitudes to you - 'your vote' - is for you too use and choose which party 'you think' will do the best 'for you and the country' nobody elses opinion counts - its your vote - thats if you even 'bother' to use it - as many other voters won't - all being fed-up with the system that thats let them down so many times in the past - with 'bad policies and the poor direction' that they've taken this country into .!!

I'm thinking you are in England.

On this side of the pond, the Republicans are for the republic. and the DEMOCRATS are for marxist, socialist, fascism, not democracy.

In England, the conservatives are what they say they are, like our Republicans. And Your "labour" party, you would Think would be for the worker Right? Nope! they are about as much for labour as our Democrats are for democracy..They are for ORGANIZED labour, or Unions! Which are against the corporations who issue the paychecks. But FOR getting Labour party politicians re-elected!

In fact your labour party IS JUST LIKE our Demoncrat (not a misspelling) party!.

Wight Chemist was correct untill he said that extreme right wing is nazism. Hitler was a Socialist Facist.

Racial bigotry is prevalent in all groups and has nothing to do with conservatism OR liberalism!

Labour: spend all the money, pander to the unemployed, socialist leanings, love Europe and the unions.

Conservatives: make the tough decisions in order to not wreck the economy, more focused on the middle class, right of centre, most of the party is Eurosceptic.

Normally conservatives are right wing and they are traditionalists/ royalists. They don't like change. Labour are left wing and are normally socialists and like increasing taxes to pay in order to give money to the poor. I say normally because its not always as cut and dry as that.

Extreme right wing is nazism and extreme left wing is communism.

    Polar opposites

Like republican right wing in america and Left wing democrats. It is really that simple.

I am for LABOUR, but I am american so my vote does not count.

    Cheers

    Great question

Americans probably dont know much about UK politics.
