I am going to cook myself a meal and I have almost no cooking experience ... can you give me tips?
So I have been living in a place with some other college students and I want to cook a meal because everything I eat is typically cooked in an oven from frozen, I already know what I want in it but I am a little unsure about some of the finer details. I am using lean ground beef, green and red peppers, onions, microwavable rice, mexican spice, and cheese. I will spell out my process here and see if it sounds alright.
Warm pan to med-high and put olive oil on it. Put beef in the pan and proceed to cook by moving beef around with spatula for the next ten minutes. Chop up onions and peppers (during these 10 minutes) but never let the meat sit for too long. Turn burner on low add spice, and then, add the peppers and onions. Microwave the rice and mix all this around for 2 - 3 minutes. Turn off the burner, and add cheese on top and add the rice, then mix all together and serve.

Your peppers and onions need to go in while the pan is still on med-high. I like to let my meat sit for a bit to get nice and browned (without too much stirring) because it adds really good flavor. Also, the more you stir it the more it will break down into smaller and smaller pieces, so if you want chunks...
Add the spices with the meat, it will give it a nice flavor, except garlic, you don't want to scorch garlic, add it right before you turn the heat down and cook it until you can smell it, less than a minute. Also, there should be plenty of heat from the rice and meat to melt the cheese. I would remove it from the skillet before I add the cheese; it will make clean up easier and you will retain more cheese in your dish, instead of the bottom of the skillet.
Good luck, enjoy your dinner :)

I think the beef is going to be over-cooked before the peppers and onions are done.
Brown up the ground beef (don't depend on a time to be done, just use your eyes). Then drain off the fat, and put the beef into a dish to hold it. Now, use the pan to cook the peppers and onions. When they are done, to your taste (never be afraid to taste what you are cooking), add the beef back to bring it back up to hot. Then add the spices (I assume a fajita spice mix?), some lime, salt and pepper. Then add the cheese and rice.

Tommorrow I want you to go to Walmart and purchase a slow cooker crock pot. They are cheap. About 10 or 15 dollars. Put it on low in the morning add the following: a small roast (it can be frozen doesn't matter), get some beef bouillion flakes (not cubes - the flakes break down quicker) add two teaspoons to a cup of water mix. Pour on the roast. Cut 2 onions up quick can be in chunks throw them in. Pepper. If you have vegs such as potatoes, carrots yes you can add them. But I am trying to make this easy for you.
Also, the roast in the slow cooker is great with a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce all day on low temp. It will fall apart and make great sandwiches. ("__")

It sounds fine, but peppers and onions take longer to cook than you realize (unless you like them crunchy!). The finer they're chopped, the less time they'll take to cook, so dice them really fine, or add them to the pan before the beef and let them start to cook first. Otherwise, it sounds great for your first meal!

Well i wouldnt cook the meat with olive oil, since the fats from the meat will cook it just fine. but if you want you can saute the onions and peppers in a different pan. thats, in my oppinion, the best way to do it. also, if your going to make meat balls, you want to make sure its cooked thoroughly, or atleast barely pink on the inside. But if your not going to make meat balls, then chop the meat up very well, and cook that way. make sure its not pink at all though.
but if you insist on cooking with olive oil, one tip, it heats up VERY quickly, and it doesnt boil. haha a tip my boyfriend QUICKLY found out lol

use very high heat and a hot pan to cook the meat. you get a lot more flavour from seared meat then from meat that is just browned.
