Is anyone else sick of hearing about Ovechkin?
Before I say anything else, let me make it clear that I think he's a great hockey player, and while I think he's a bit arrogant I have nothing against him.
But seriously, why does this guy have to top the NHL headlines every single day?
For the last two weeks the top headlines have been nothing but "Ovie still out... still" and "OMG he might be coming back tomorrow night". WHY? If you consider the number of star players sitting out right now due to SERIOUS injuries for LONG periods of time, why do we have to hear about every single game that Ovie sits out? And now that he's back, we're going to have to hear about what a great recovery he's made... EVERY.. SINGLE.. DAY.
The man is a decent hockey player, but he is no Gretzky or Lemieux. I realize he's a star player, but I would rather read articles about REAL news, rather than his day to day.
Am I alone on this?
Joe: I agree that I would rather read news about hockey itself than the ridiculous politics, but they need to give this up-to-the-minute, non-stop Ovechkin coverage a rest.
I remember a month or so ago when NHL 2K10 was released, they had an entire article about Ovechkin at the launch party, and on the VERY SAME DAY they had an article about him making some trip to New York to kiss babies or something.
THIS stuff is not hockey. It's not just a matter of his return to hockey being so important, it's about the media making a big deal of everything he does, and it's starting to get very tired.
Beerslayer: Trust me I do. I just wish there were more articles to read that weren't entirely about Ovechkin.

he's the one (of several) unofficial faces of the NHL. he has the most goals by any NHL player over the last 4 years.
he's a significant part of the nhl.
then factor in the media. they have a job. they're not a service. they talk about what interests people to the point that THEY define what interests people.
case in point... aren't we only furthering the process right now, as we speak, by talking about him?
so to answer your question... am i sick of hearing about him? not really. he adds to the excitement of the nhl.
am i sick of the media trying to influence what is really important? sure. but i accept it. if i could have changed it already, i would've. you gotta make the best of it.
if you're asking WHY is Ovechkin talked about so much, it's because of the media.
so what is "real news" exactly? if you know what it is, then why don't you ask some questions about it? see, you said "news", which means, that you got it from the media. you are subject to what they decide to report, and comment on.

I'm indifferent about the guy. Being a Penguin fan I naturally side with Sid with the rivalry but, I agree with you in that he's an awesome player. Writers write what is read and apparently people want to read about Ovechkin; hence all the articles.

Not with you on this one. This was his first injury and there was talk he might be out for over a month and it wasn't disclosed what his injury actually was at first..It's Good to see him back..I remember a few years back when Crosby got hurt and that dominated the hockey headlines.Superstars dominate the headlines..If you recall last year, Sean Avery's "sloppy seconds" was talked aboot for weeks..
Would you rather read news on Balsaille or Peter Forsberg constantly? I'd much rather read aboot what's actually happening in the NHL instead of " What could be?"

I don't have a problem with that. He's a phenomenon and that makes him very interesting. Personally, I don't read all of his press... it gets redundant. I just turn away from it.
I understand where you are coming from though. I don't get Luongo's constant praise (like the press constantly saying he is "the greatest goaltender in world") when he can't consistently get far in the playoffs.

I barely heard about him being injured at all to be honest, but I live in Pittsburgh. I don't think they care about him too much here, lol.
Doesn't it kinda remind you about Brett Favre and Lebron James? Can't they find a different topic?

i am more sick of hearing about sidney crosby. i thought it was pretty funny when ovechkin lied to the press about his injury so no im not really sick of hearing about him.

I agree with you 100%
Ovechkin is very arrogant and a big puck hog. He takes the spotlight all theee time. every time the caps play a game and i go to like NHL.com or something its all ovechkins face plastered accros the screen. its so annoying.
