Can I request a hysterectomy?

I am 34 years old and have had heavy and painful periods since I was 13. I cannot take the pill as I have had problems with it in the past. I tried Mefanamic Acid and have been told that the Mirena coil would now not be considered as I have had an endometrial ablation in September. The ablation has not worked though and my bleeding is just as heavy. I can go through almost 40 'night-time' pads in a cycle and I'm bleeding for 2 weeks at a time. I am finding myself feeling so tired when I'm on that I can't cope with my daily life. I am adamant that I do not want any children (for other reasons). The problem runs in my family and one of my aunts and several cousins have had a hysterectomy when in their early 30's, so can I request one from a gynaecologist?

I researched a few websites and from the sounds of it you could request a hysterectomy on the basis that you are having abnormal bleeding and it is affecting your activities of daily living (you said you were tired a lot of the time from high amounts of blood loss).

Many institutions have support groups and people you can talk to about making this decision. If you don't want to have children and want to stop this disruptive bleeding then I say you area prime candidate for the surgery.

Please review this website http://healthywomen.interactiverequest.com/conditi... - it should answer a lot of questions you may have. I don't know where you live, but you could always contact your local hospital or your doctor for more resources on this procedure.

You certainly could. It sounds like you've run through the other options. I presume you've tried oral hormones? And have been investigated for particular pathologies? I'm not sure about insertion of mirena coil after an ablation... it may still be an option but that's the sort of thing only a specialist gynaecologist with a particular interest in endometrial ablation would be able to answer for sure. As for a hysterectomy, it's a big operation but it's definately an option. The only harm to getting it younger as opposed to older is that you'll infertile. And if there are complications then you're going to be living with them for that much longer (like pain during sex). But you don't care about the kids thing, and you're pretty miserable as it is, so it's something most gynaecologists would be happy to talk over with you.

    Hey there,

Since the real causes of uterine fibroids are complex, it goes to follow that their treatment should also be multidimensional. A wide variety of treatments, ranging from simple medicinal drugs to complex surgeries, are available for addressing uterine fibroid symptoms. However, if you are looking for a safe and natural form of remedy, it is best to take a holistic approach to your condition.

    Yes, you *can* request this.

My GF had her uterus removed several years ago (ovaries, tubes and cervix are still there) because of fibroids that had given her nearly 5 years of nonstop bleeding (and severe anaemia because of that).

It solved the problem, and it hasn't affected her in any way at all, except for the little wee scar she now has on her lower belly.
