What is the lifespan of a Standardbred horse?
I'm looking into buying a 14 year old Standardbred gelding, and i want to make sure his life won't just go downhill from there. Is 14 past his prime? or does he have a good rest of life ahead of him?
Thanks!

It depends on what you want to use him for but 14 is perfect 4 pony club, trail riding & sports days. Really it should be the prime of his life but if he was heavily raced he may be damaged. Check his legs for bumps & scars & check his teeth too.

We have a mare who's 27, still does trail rides and is in fantastic shape! Depends on the horse! She's a standardbred!

if the pony (in spite of breed) is knowledgeable proper and has the wonderful temperament (they are all diverse. one standardbred could nicely be intense strung, yet another could nicely be comfortable).... then you definately'll do great. element is...do no longer decide a horse via its breed. decide each and each horse as a guy or woman. in simple terms through fact a horse raced, would not recommend it is going to be a warm mess it is entire existence. some horses raced and sucked at it, and are great for path driving quite, through fact they do exactly no longer decide to circulate quickly. others raced and gained some, yet are nevertheless healthful and sound and have sturdy brains. others raced and are warm messes which will take time to retrain. I recommend you discover a coach to evaluate a horse for you. Or circulate to the rescue and verify out the horses, and spot if the sellers are straightforward (rescues tend to be straightforward, yet in simple terms pay interest).... then you definately must be ok. as for the standardbred vs a one-eyed purebred arab... that may no longer sufficient information. i've got ridden a one eyed horse who become great. so what? he's have been given one eye. horses have crappy innovative and prescient whilst in comparison with their different senses besides. what concerns is training and temperament. it is it.

my boy lived to be 27. he raced until he was 9 when i got him. The last 3-4 years his job was to simply walk around trails with me for a hour or so and he seemed to perk up and prance as he did when i first got him. well into his 20's though he went on 4-5 hour trail rides, perhaps at a slower pace then when 9 or 10 but he kept up nicely with the company we rode in
so no 14 is not past his prime if he is sound, and he can live a long life

The average life expectancy of any horse is 25,although many live years beyond this. You need to ask yourself what you plan to do i.e. competing, and how long you plan to do it.There`s no reason why a 14yr old horse cant compete but the likely hood is that in say 6-10 yrs time he may not be up to it.My horse is 18 and had to be retired due to arthritis. Its just a chance you take but I would definitely get the horse vetted and the vet will be able to tell you if the horse is capable of what you plan to do with him.

Well, I'm not a Standardbred expert, but horses can compete or be spunky even in their 20's. 14 is around a horse's prime, and as things get older they get slower. Horses are no different. He should be fine and energetic well into his mid twenties or so.

The life span is around 27 years. My mom is big on that stuff so you can trust 27 years is a good answer.

Horses can live and work up to 35 years or more. It depends on how well you care for it and feed it and what you are going to do. If you were going to race it, then it is less likely to manage that long, but dressage, trail etc and good feeding, shoeing and worming and he could well go that long.
