Thierry Henry: "Replay fairest solution".?
Henry's double handball in the build up to William's Gallas's equaliser saw Les Bleus win through to next summer's tournament 2-1 on aggregate.
The incident has caused uproar in the footballing world and led to accusations that Henry's perceived 'cheating' has damaged the image of the game.
Calls from the Irish camp for a replay have fallen on deaf ears at FIFA, but Henry claims that he is in favour of a rematch.
"Naturally I feel embarrassed at the way that we won and feel extremely sorry for the Irish who definitely deserve to be in South Africa," said Henry.
"Of course the fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control.
"I have said at the time and I will say again that yes I handled the ball. I am not a cheat and never have been.
"It was an instinctive reaction to a ball that was coming extremely fast in a crowded penalty area.
"As a footballer you do not have the luxury of the television to slow the pace of the ball down 100 times to be able to make a conscious decision.
"People are viewing a slow motion version of what happened and not what I or any other footballer faces in the game.
"If people look at it in full speed you will see that it was an instinctive reaction.
"It is impossible to be anything other than that. I have never denied that the ball was controlled with my hand. I told the Irish players, the referee and the media this after the game.
"There is little more I can do apart from admit that the ball had contact with my hand leading up to our equalising goal and I feel very sorry for the Irish."
Why FIFA don't want to grant a rematch, although Henry said that?

I say play the rematch! I think that FIFA wants to avoid the rematch because it fears other request for rematches in the future from other teams that suffer the similar consequences. With televised matches, replays and varied angles, there will always be a request for things like that (higher authority) when it comes down to big games but I think that this one should be an exception because of the size of the prize.

I like how the France governing body and Henry came out saying they agree there should be a rematch after FIFA said their wouldn't be. I agree the rules say there is nothing they can do. but my question is where was the ref or Assistant ref when this happened. Also people need to stop talking about video replay in soccer, maybe it would have helped this out but it would ruin the flow in soccer and would ruin soccer all together. Sucks as a Ireland fan, but everything is to be left on the field, nothing can be done now. Everyone in the world knows it was a hand ball that led to the goal, and nothing based on the rules can be done about it now.
What was Ireland asking to be replayed the whole game? or just the extra time?

"...I told the Irish players, the referee and the media this after the game.."
What good is that to anyone?
FIFA's too proud to grant the will of the fans. Perhaps they have a policy of belief that all the mistakes balance out in the long term. If they make exceptions even for as massive and crass a mistake as this then they'd have no way of drawing the line.
Henry cheated, end of. He could have owned up at the time but he didn't. Typical professional footballer really.
Shame they couldn't introduce something like in tennis - you're allowed three challenges in a game to go to the video replay.

Yes, a replay is the fairest solution, but that's not what FIFA is about. FIFA has their rulings and one of them is that ALL DECISIONS made by the man in the middle ARE FINAL. Good on FIFA for standing by that.
You may be able to contest red cards after a match but that doesn't take away from the fact that the team had to play without a player in the match, and a rematch isn't granted when red cards are rescinded.

The trouble is that when you start granting replays because referees have made mistakes, you open a can of worms. Should England have got a replay for the Maradona hand of God? Should West Germany have got a replay in the 1966 final? What about when referees make bad calls in the EPL, should teams have the right to ask for a replay?
Listen to the Roy Keane interview on BBC, he makes no excuses.

Thierry Henry doesn't have the power to decide whether or not a game is replayed. That's why.

There wont be a replay and that was never in doubt, blimey if you had a replay for every match that was decided by a bad decision,or blatant cheating the season would never end.Its about time players looked at themselves and stopped criticising the refs.To hear players butter wouldnt melt in their mouths lol.The only way to stop the fiasco is to introduce technology.

Henry is a cheat and he knows fifa will never grant a replay.
I hope France get stuffed in the world cup.

he said its an instinctive reaction- hes a football player he knows not to use his hand, what a dumba** just cause a ball is coming fast doesn't mean you stick your hand out. personally i do not see the rematch ever happening but he ruined the chance for many irish players so his chance should be taken away and not allowed to play next year.
a deliberate hand ball is a red card offence for which you would normally miss the next match at least he should miss something.
your taught fair play from the start, and cheating is really begining to ruin football now, something has to be done soon

Why? Perhaps because they should have to grant a rematch between Eire and Georgia?
