Have you thought about dump trucks lately?
I mean they don't really carry dumps around do they? They just carry dirt and old rocks . Is it because they dump their contents and hence the name 'dump' came about? I don't know, I am terribly confused.

Actually, yes I have.
I just purchased my nephew's son a Dump Truck Dudley for Christmas.
He'll love it - he's such a "boy" boy.
I imagine what you think about the origins of the term is correct, here's a bit of Wiki info:
The dump truck was first conceived in Saint John, New Brunswick when Robert T. Mawhinney attached a dump box to a flat bed truck in 1920.

They are called "dump trucks" because of the way they are constructed to tip the tray up and dump their load. In some places they are also called "tip trucks" for the same reason. I have even heard them called "tilt tray trucks"

Yes, that is exactly why and I'm not even being sarcastic.
I really don't know why this is confusing, maybe you're high?
