My solution to the BCS? What say you?
What is wrong with this, besides being too logical!
8 team playoff
Conference Champions (title game) from ACC,SEC and Big 12 get a bid.
NCAA would force Big 10, PAC 10 and Big East to have a Conf. Title game before they get auto bids.
Now two at large bids for two highest ranked teams in the top 15 but not in a qualifying conference. If there aren't two teams the highest rated non automatic qualifier. (Boise St.and TCU would get their shot!) These 8 teams would be seeded according to traditional BCS scale with 1vs8 2vs7 3vs6 and 4vs5. All other teams would qualify for traditional bowl games!
The 8 team playoffs takes 7 games. I suggest the playoff should use existing bowls. (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Chick-fil-a and pick another) Rose, Fiest, Sugar and Orange rotate hosting various rounds, while the other 3 less bowls always host round 1 games. The major bowl hosting round one game always gets the 1 vs 8 mathcup.
Ok what is wrong with this setup? Besides being too logical! The regular season still matters! Bowl games still exist, schools and communities still get their exposure and $$$. And the fans and players get what we deserve a chance to see a true national championship.
PAC 10, really? It is very possible that they could have had a bunch of 6-3 teams to end the season? If Arizona beats Oregon they have mess! Then what?
As for the decrease in revenue? I don't buy that for a second! These games would be must watch TV. They could charge whatever they wanted for the TV rights! Sponsors would line up as well!
As for finals? Who are we kidding? But if you must push the schedule back a week.
Ok schedule (I don't care) round 1 starts either weekend before Christmas, round two the weekend after, title game week after that. At most you play 16 games. Cut a game or two from non-conference if you need too. I really don't need to see Bama vs Chattanooga anyways!

I have presented almost this same scenario in 2007 on this site. But I used the top two teams in each of the current BCS conferences and four at larges using the BCS rankings. Any Non BCS schools in the top 20 get preference.
Also, you would need to somehow distribute the money made so to the participating school's conference since many schools would get more then one bowl appearance.
This crap some people argue about the regular season not meaning as much is just idiotic as it doesn't effect the excitement of the season of the smaller schools. You know, the ones that already crown a real champion instead of a mythical one.
As far as making room on the schedule, it obviously already exists prior to the current bowl games.
The current bowl sites would need to be utilized during this playoff to get this to happen. This would also create neutral sites to play the games.
This would be a huge money maker for the NCAA, even more then "March Madness" effects the basketball teams for the schools.

The extra games will end up right in the middle of finals. I realize that these guys aren't in college for the education but still the point of college is to get an education.
Currently the NCAA rules wont allow the Big 10, Pac 10, and Big East to have a conference championship.
The current bowl system brings in way more money than your playoff and you can bet nobody is willing to give up money.
