Chartering in/out of Army Basic due to illness. How long?

My son is in Basic-The Doc there has told him he is depressed and should go home (please don't down him or make a rude comment-I am angry, worried and mad that they should give him a crutch already) however, I have not heard from him in two weeks, I know he can't call and he's used the ATM at the base-so he's still there. I also know my son and he would call if he was back home and at his friends apt. I'm hoping he is still having to do activities and is receiving some sort of consul and med help. Also-how long does the paperwork take? Does he stay till the end of his basic? As he is over 21 yrs of course they can't tell me anything. I'm still a worried and peeved parent though and he's still my son. Thank you for any info you can pass on about the processing etc.

if he is being discharged expect it to take many weeks.. possibly months. One, they will not let him go until they are certain that he is A not Faking It just to get out of training and B not going to injure himself or others if he isn't.

and priority goes to those who ARE finishing up on time. he could very well be stuck there for weeks after his original scheduled graduation.

Oh, he can call. If he's in the process of a medical discharge then he's totally out of the training pipeline and the rules are very different. They'll have him doing busy work..... cleaning, painting, etc...

You are correct, The Privacy Act of 1974 prevents the military from releasing any information.

Back when I was at boot camp the guys who were weeded out and processed for discharge were still there waiting while the rest of us graduated and left.

There has to be a Legal desk for you to call at the Base. Your son will have to sign a release in order for them to release information to you. Usually, Recruits are pulled from the Boot Camp company and transferred to an Administrative Separation Barracks for discharge process. You just have to get on the phone and start calling.

Telephone his company commander. The commander knows everything about your son.

Google the post where your son is stationed. You will find the post information office. Call them. Ask for the Inspector General office.
