Engine running very rough after cleaning Astra (2001) MAF sensor.?

I have a 2001 Holden (Vauxhall) Astra 1.8, lately the check engine light came on with the code 0170, the car had also started to stall when engine was started from cold. You'd have start the car and wait for a minute or so before driving off. From my research on the web I came to the conclusion that my MAF sensor might be dirty so I bought a can of CRC MAF cleaner and cleaned it, after replacing the sensor the car now runs extremely rough when idle and the engine coughs and makes an "air sucking" sound. The car still idles at around 1000 rpm but the engine is shaking and making a weird air sucking sound. All this happened after cleaning the MAF, before it would just run a bit rough when cold but after warming up it would be all good. The sensor wires are all contained within the casing so I couldn't of damaged them by touch. What could I have done wrong?

The intake pipework has not been reassembled properly or you have damaged it whilst getting to the MAF. The sucking is the air leak which is causing the rough running

Is your check engine light on? If so all you need to do is pull the code. Any auto parts store should have the scanner, they sell some cheaper units that are actually quite affordable. (less than $50 USA) Also, some parts stores will have loaner units and will check for no charge. If the light is not on I would pull it back apart and recheck everything. Clean the sensor again, and be sure to leave it apart for at least 3 or 4 hours before you put it back together. Make absolutely certain it is dry. Then put it all together and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. Disconnect the battery before you work on the car and this should help reset the computer for when you restart the car...Good Luck...
