What is a 2.2L L4 engine?

I'm looking for a car and I found a Chevy Cavalier, this is the type of engine it says it has. I'm only familiar with the V6s V4s so I have no clue if this is good or not. Just any information about it will be greatly appreciated.

BTW I just need the car to go to school, work, daycare.

2.2L means that the combined volume of the cylinders at bottom dead center is 2.2 liters of water.

the L4 means it is a straight 4 cylinder design as is typical of 4 cylinders... although Subaru and Porsche use flat or opposed 4 cylinder designs (also called a boxer engine)

the GM 2.2L motor is okay. not as fuel efficient as most in it's class but more powerful. not as refined as most in it's class and reasonably reliable after 1999. prior to that it was a hunk of junk with blown engines not uncommon prior to 40k (a number of non racing friends)

as for the V in V-6, it does NOT mean vertical it means V. the cylinders are laid out in 2 banks of 3 cylinders each using a single cam shaft at the bottom and the top of the cylinders being laid slightly on edge so that they form the shape of a V. it can be a narrow or wide V with the degrees running from 15-90 degrees.

No such thing as a "V4" in an American car. The "I4" stands for Inline 4 cylinder. The 2.2 L is the standard 4 cyl engine in a Cavalier.

It is a good little motor. They start to get tired around 175k miles.

    Good Luck!

It is a 2.2 liter engine size and it is a in line 4 cylinder. Four cylinder engines are in line they are not like the V-6 or V-8 (v-for vertical). Four cylinder engine gets better gas mileage than the 6 or 8.
