Removing data from a PC hard drive to an external HD?

Problem:

My pc runs on Windows XP.

It hangs from 3 minutes to a few days randomly upon start up and has to go through several manual resets before it does not hang. It gets the occasional blue screen of death error.

Usually it takes 2 - 3 start ups before it operates normally without hanging for the next few days.

Recently I've been getting more of these and more blue screens of death very early upon switching on the pc. It takes more than 2 - 3 resets after hanging consecutively a few minutes after the start up.

I'm planning to reformat my PC but I need to get some valuable data out.

I tried to burn the data onto DVDs, however, because its been hanging a few minutes after starting up my pc I'm barely even able to get it to burn 10% before the PC hangs.

Question:

Is there any way I can remove data from an internal HD without actually turning on my computer so that I can transfer my data onto an external HD?

Or can I unplug my internal HD and plug it into another PC and get the data out?

How can I resolve this problem?

Any tips, suggestions or alternate solutions?

Jenova.

This will seem hard and time consuming at first:

But what you should learn to do is download a live version of linux http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and then , if you don't know, learn how to burn that .iso image to a disk. Nero will do it, but there are many others.. Once you are able to make, or aquire a live disk, you will be able to boot up off that disk and run the operating system without actually running windows.. which will allow you to run a virus scan on your windows hard drive as well as transfer any data off said hard drive to a usb..

    1. you can order the proper attachments to hook the internal HDD to the computer to act as an external HDD (but i'm not entirely sure if that's the actual idea of what is going on)

    2. OR you can pay Staples or Best Buy or do it for you.

either way, you are going to be paying anywhere in the range of $40 - $100

Source(s): I've had I don't know how many people have asked me that. point is, that's your best choices. Hope this helps ;D
