WHY WAS THERE NO FIGHTING ON THE FRENCH ITALIAN BORDER IN 1944?

    Anglo Americans had landed in Provence, forcing the Germans to retreat to the Rhine, while in Italy the Allies attacked the Gothic line, forcing the Germans to retreat to the Po Valley and then to Germany...

    At the end of 1944 and even more in early 1945, the German army was on the defensive on the Gothic line and defensive line after they surrendered in the spring of 1945, German troops retreated quickly en route to Germany, with no possibility of forming a new defensive line on the River PO.

    It was therefore impossible for the Germans also preside over the same period with large forces Alpine border with France, with already the first formations of French partisans (the Maquis) which looks boldly into areas inhabited by Italian-speaking parts.

    Only some formations fascist black shirts, the X Mas and Monte Rosa Division garrisoned the Alpine valleys of Piedmont and Aostana, making some raid against Italian partisans...
